Another new shooter for your favourite next-gen-hi-def-under-the-telly-o-trons.

    New DICE shooter revealed
    Friday 29-Jun-2007 9:46 AM
First word on Battlefield dev's top secret console-exclusive shooter, Mirror's Edge, inside

Battlefield developer Digital Illusions is gearing up to unveil a brand new first-person shooter called Mirror's Edge, CVG can reveal

We're told the title will appear on consoles only, PS3 and Xbox 360 to be precise, and that the developer has big plans to shake up the genre with it.

The only image we've seen from the game shows a young Asian female dressed like some kind of futuristic punk. And she's crouching holding a pistol down between her legs.

Weird, circuit-board-looking tattoos run down the outside of her right arm from the shoulder, and black bobbed hair frames a face that's covered in white foundation. Surrounding her right eye is crazy black make-up shaped in a star.

It reminds us of the movie Nikita in a way, and gives the impression of a futuristic setting.

In the past Digital Illusions has mentioned (and here) development of at least two unnamed games for PS3 and Xbox 360 - presumably one of these is Battlefield: Bad Company, and it now appears another is Mirror's Edge.

    More on Mirror's Edge soon.

A good cyberpunk game could be all right. I'm thinking along the lines of Blade Runner perhaps? :)

Our month-long focus on indie games starts with my look at the PS4's best game (still): Resogun!

That doesn't have a single player story mode bot =! single player. BF2142 is a good game anyway, solid but not exceptional like 1942.

Talking about that WWI game they made before BF1942.

They've never made anything like that.

I had the distinct impression that Codename Eagle was strictly multiplayer. I guess I was mistaken.

    Codename Eagle!
Ace in multiplayer, TBH they weren't much of a company back then so it might not be a good indicator.

Some schmoe over at GAF just posted some tiny screenshots from this game, the first in-game ones I've seen.

I must say that it looks promising, as far as it's possible to judge by those little screenshots.

Slightly larger screens than in the op further down in the thread

I wonder if the red annd blue sections are colour coded signposts for different routes of variying difficulty.

I think you could be right. Blue stuff - easy to get to. Red stuff - harder. Makes sense.

W00t! This seems to be an outstanding idea.

Not everyone can clamber about across between and over high buildings, but somehow it remains an attractive concept to be able to do so, fluidly.
We want to enable the player to move like a real person, with the ability to run, jump, vault and slide in a way that has never been seen before.
I regularly wonder how the first-person perspective can be used, outside of shooters, and this is a genius way to allow people to play a new experience, using that perspective to connect with the game. I like the art style, because you can clearly see what you're trying to traverse. No complex shadows or other effects to obscure the view. Just player vs. environment, with the addition of some sort of resistance element.

Should be great fun. So, I foresee a pre-order. :D

Sensational reference material about the game, comes from an EDGE article uploaded to Next-gen.biz about Mirror's Edge. Do read it.

Some very nice screenshots were released today.

#5 is my favourite, closely followed by #6.

    SCEE Gamers' Day Trailer HD

Wow. Brilliant, frankly. Blue sky gaming is making a comeback recently? Some of the effects masked the general speed though, has to be noted.

Now marry the FEELING that trailer gives to a story that actually goes some way to tug the heartstrings, and I'll be impressed.

I do like the use of colour.
  • Deleted user 6 May 2008 18:38:09
Yes, very thoughtful - and possibly the strongest palette I've seen in a game so far, frankly.

If they get this right this could be my favourite thing ever.

I was sneered at (by a person who was unpopular due to being sneery, admittedly) when I started out in the industry and suggested interactive environmental elements were colour coded like this in the acrobatic game we were working on.

The game went on to review badly, with reviewers particularly noting it was never clear which environmental features you could interact with and how.

    So hah!

Alas I'm too afraid of naming and shaming and then being faced by sneery boy in my next job interview. We actually got on fairly well apart from that. Considering he was as sneery as could be.

I'll PM you for what it's worth, but you won't have heard of any of us. :)
