But that's the point. You do a straight port - fine, the game mechanics are intact, the gameplay is unchanged, just the platform and control method are different. But this "Revolution" appears to be a questionable way to introduce new players to the genre by altering the basics that govern it.

Granted, Sid Meier's track record is very impressive. Can he keep it up or will he become a victim of marketeers wanting to tap this fashionable "next-gen" business? Time will tell, sooner or later...

The PSP version is the mutts nuts. Easily my favourite PSP game. Spent 7 hours straight playing it a few nights ago. I cant believe my left thumb is still working.

    What, Pirates! ?

    I wasn't too impressed.

I can accomodate changes, as long as the game remains turn-based.

Here's hoping they make it playable for all those who haven't already played Civ games. I bought Civ 3 for my Mac, only to find it unplayable because of an incomprehensible jargon-filled manual and a bloody useless tutorial. Why can't they look at something like Advance Wars (or even Starcraft and Empire Earth) to see how to do a good tutorial?

    Here's hoping a Mac version's released too!

I thought the new Pirates was pretty boring after a couple of hours, to be honest.

And if people already complain about this getting dumbed down, it's the fault of the press release.

If they had announced a "normal" Civ V for PC and next-gen consoles, I'd be enthusiastic, but not after reading keywords like "streamlined" and "constant action".

I found Civ 4 to be a lot more newbie-friendly. The tutorial still sucked, though.

Heh, maybe "constant action" isn't just about the combat.

CONSTANT SLAVE-WHIPPING ACTION. BUILD THOSE PYRAMIDS, FOOLS!

If it's not turn-based they can piss off. Not everything has to be turned into an RTS

3 was terrible, it was my first try at the series and I really didn't get on with it. 4 however, is fantastic.

Another echo of turnbased over here... Only on a PC do RTSs work properly. And turnbased is better anyhow.

Absolutely, same here. If they go RTS then take back everything I just said about trusting the guy :p

    From the EG article:

There'll be 16 civilisations to master and lead to victory in the turn-based strategic theatres of, well, everywhere, along with various famous historical leaders to control or compete against

I doubt EG know more than we do, but I also really doubt it'll be an RTS.

That's something at least. Although there's a lot to be said for really slow RTS vs turn based. Adds to the realism and all that...

LB, you really are a massive geek.

Sid Meir is a smart guy. He knows he'll be crucified if he makes it an RTS. Not that he'd want to do it, anyway.

EDIT: Also, you can keep realism out of my strategy games, thank you very much. Not that RTS games are realistic, either.

Europa Universalis works pretty well in real-time, admittedly.

A few screenshots would be nice, surely they won't just make that press release and then go into hiding for the next few months, will they? Especially as spring 2008 isn't that far away.

They look like the Civ 4 leaders?
  • Deleted user 28 June 2007 15:29:57
It looks exactly the same as Civ IV really.

Um, just the game character, obviously.

Looks all a tad more cartoony, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I agree with disc - the last two shots do look a bit RTS-ey.
