So, I need some guidance on a DS RPG. I used to be a big fan of FF but I'm not sure I could be arsed with 30 random battles a minute these days and magical starsign looks far too saccharine soaked. Any suggestions?

IMO there's none that are "must haves" yet...

There aren't any. I mean, Etrian Odyssey is great, but it's not what you're looking for. You might want to have a look at the GBA game Riviera: The Promised Land which is really excellent, but not to everyone's liking.

Invest in some of the quality GBA offerings (esp. Superstar Saga and FFTA). Alternatively, stop being a big girl and buy a PSP with homebrew.

Anyone imported DQ: Joker or Monster Hunter (or are they the same game?). If so, are they worth it?

I *really* enjoyed FF III on the DS. First time I've played a FF game (other than FF7 on the PS1 which I never got onto the second disk)

    PSN ID: Djini

Lots of Etrian Odyssey love, looked it up last night. Can anyone expand the general gist? Not just a dungeon crawler is it?

The lack of a Fire Emblem DS I find bizarre and extremely annoying. Seems like a perfect match.

Mario and Luigi Partners in Time is a must have. Don't overlook it just for being Mario, you'll miss out :)

Partners in Time is great. FF III is very traditional, too traditional for many players. I still enjoy it.

Also bought Magical Starsign but I am a bit disappointed with it. It lacks atmosphere. It's the little things that I don't get along with, like for example that I don't see the enemy names in battles. Yes they are not important but it's still nice to know what the monsters are named.

Also a great game but not really and RPG but rather sidescroller with RPG elements is Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow (and Portrait of Ruin, which I own but haven't played yet). Dawn of Sorrow is one of the best DS games out there though.

Wifi, touch screen and a mic for speaking to your friends, its a perfect fit!

I'm slightly annoyed that one of my old favourites was made into something so hideous :-(. I haven't even played it, but only because you can't have 2 files on one cart so I can't even moan about it :-(

FFIII is the best and pretty much the only proper RPG for DS. I don't count those Mario games, they're platformers not RPGs.

    say no to Eurogamer sigs

Spot the guy who hasn't played Etrian Odyssey. Or don't really beardy WRPGs count as RPGs anymore? :-)

FF3 is fantastic. I actually disagree with it being oh-so oldschool. The only thing which is kinda harsh is that there are no save points near dungeon bosses. But that's not really much of a time killer even if you would die (the final dungeon aside).

You will never encounter more than three enemies at once. In the original FF there were groups of up to 8 enemies, making it CONSIDERABLY harder. I don't know why people think the DS version is hardcore. I despise tough games nowadays (lack of time and nerves), that's why I didn't get it at release time, despite being a RPG lover. What a nice surprise that it just isn't one of those.

There's only two 'bad' things about it: No dungeon save points and that you could run into an enemy group you just can't beat yet. The later basically only happens two times:

First, when you get into the second town and move into the cellar, the skelets will annihilate you (if you don't escape). You're not supposed to search the village yet, as you've also been told! Second, when you fly to unknown continents in the latter half of the game. The enemies won't be so strong that you can't at least beat the first group and leave quickly again or escape.

The "running into overwhelming enemies" is part of any Final Fantasy title I played (only 6-9) and can also happen in many western RPG. Among other changes from the original, you also get more experience from opponents in the DS version, smoothing out the levelling curve.

In a nutshell: I just don't get who started with all the "FF3 is hardcore" hype/crap. The DS version is just not. It's the best rpg available (in english) on the system. Maybe aside Pokemon. And Partners in Time is boring.

I didn't know how much I loved the game until I wrote this. :p

For me Etrian Odyssey.. but it is a very hard core 3D dungeon crawler. Amazingly good if you like those.

Contact is quite interesting and quirky. Etrian odyssey is huge, but I eventually lost interest.

And I might have dreamed this, but aren't Bioware making a DS RPG?

Where did you buy it from?

I lurk. If I've spoken to you, I'm either impassioned, or drunk.

    Get FFVI for the GBA.

I didn;t get on with FFIII. It was just so booooring. I had quite a few niggles with it at the time when I was playing it iirc. They might be in the actual thread.
