Beck announces new album, signs to Capitol Records

Beck has signed to Capitol Records, who will release his new album Morning Phase. It's out in February 2014.

The album features many of the same musicians from his 2002 album Sea Change (Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Joey Waronker, Smokey Hormel, Roger Joseph Manning Jr., and Jason Falkner). The press release describes it as "a companion piece of sorts" to that album.

    YESSSSSSSSSSSS

    @Tom_Servo

Great news! At last, a new album.

Sounds encouraging, Sea Changes was a great album.

He sounded a bit bored on his last two so hopefully it's better than that.

Mutations and Sea Change are his best, in my opinion. Though I have a soft spot for The Information. If it's like any of those, I'll be a happy chappy.

I'm honestly not sure how much of a Beck fan I am, and how much of a Nigel Godrich fan I am. Sadly, I guess Godrich is too tied up with Atoms for Peace at the moment to produce Morning Phase.

So, I guess folk are already aware of the new album, Morning Phase. It's out February 25th. As for the first single, here it is.

@Raiko101 Not too shabby - he's got a lot to live up to when it comes to Mutations and Sea Change - even now I still listen to Mutations pretty much weekly!

I love Mutations. My favourite Beck album, closely followed by Guero.

Come on people- the answer to "what is the best Beck album?" is always "Odelay" ;)

New stuff sounds awesome- he has a way with blending tone and harmony that's exquisite. Incredibly underrated.

    Wrong.

His best album is either Mutations or Guero.
  • Deleted user 5 February 2014 09:37:50
He's underrated in the same sense that Phillip Seymour Hoffman is underrated.

i.e. most people that have more than a passing interest really rate him.
  • Deleted user 5 February 2014 09:38:17
And I like Sea Change best.

Defriended is probably my favourite thing he has put out recently.

And, yeah, Sea Change is possibly his best album but I think Guero has a few stronger individual tracks. Broken Drum is a favourite.

Although recently, ive found it harder and harder to get over the fact that he is a super-harcdcore scientologist (kind of like how I struggle to watch anything with Giovani Ribisi in it).

Yeah, he's like a third generation scientologist mega-thetan.

Hes married to giovani ribisis sister because scientologists like to keep it in the 'family'.

I couldn't care less. As long as he's not a paedophile, a murderer, or doing anything to harm or bother anybody else, then whatever.

I couldn't give a shit, either. He's not trying to force his views on me - or anyone else (as far as I can tell) - so he can believe what he likes.

    Anyway, new album's meh, imo.

Get it from the usual places now. Then buy it on the 25th, then everyone wins.

Yup. Two albums. I can't remember what he said of the other one. It might be a follow up to Modern Guilt, but that could mean anything.

I've had it for a couple of weeks and am unfortunately unimpressed. Songs lack magic.

I'm rather enjoying it myself. The atmosphere injected in some of the songs gives it a bit of an 80's vibe. There's a number of songs on it that feel like they might be classics.
