Harmonix, along with its owner MTV, teaming up with Electronic Arts to offer budding musicians the chance to create their own rock group. Four instrument controllers including: lead guitar, bass, drums and a microphone for the lead singer.

On PS3 and Xbox 360 this Christmas.

Online features, including the chance to team up with musicians in other countries and the ability to download songs.

Major music publishers involved. EMI Music Publishing and Warner/Chappell Music are allowing "unrivaled access to their catalogues of incredible songs". These mega-publishers house labels including EMI Music, Hollywood Records, Sony BMG Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group's Universal Music Enterprises and Warner Music Group's Rhino Entertainment, which have all agreed to supply master recordings by their artists for use in the game.

Downloadable content. "We have very, very ambitious plans in the area [of downloadable content]," Rigopulos said, adding that Harmonix has "big plans [for] building an online library."

Jeff Yapp, Executive Vice President of MTV Program Enterprises said Rock Band is a "completely new model that gives labels a way to promote artists"

Harmonix has created a "brilliant technical solution to latency problems,"

Both PS3 and 360 have camera peripherals and Harmonix is considering options to allow these

There is also potential for user-generated content to make its way online.

Rock Band may ship in a four-in-one massive box and/or as separate units.

Guitar Hero II ax will work with Rock Band on Xbox 360. Guitar Hero controllers purchased for the PlayStation 2 versions will work with Rock Band.

New guitar peripheral is being produced for Rock band, which will vary in some way.

ROCK BAND. THIS IS JUMPING IN.

    Colour me skeptical.

And how much will all those peripherals cost? I'm assuming you don't get them all in the box.

If they are right about having all that access to all that music, and they do the online stuff well, and you can just do the singing portion on its own, then this sounds like a Singstar killer, too.

i'm guessing the technical solution will be a bit like how battlefield 2 recorder works, everybody has the content, it's just a small string of code that creates the combination. rather than downloading an mp3 file of a song.

I'm guessing the technical solution will be a bit like the thing they describe in their patent. :-)

It really is quite exciting. Gamespot reported that GameStop have already jumped the gun and listed the peripherals for sale (at a total cost of $300 for the lot).

However, I see it as a slow progression thing. I could buy this, rock out with all the music they're supposedly going to provide using my current GH guitar.

If ever the fancy takes me, I could pick up an extra peripheral. It wouldn't have to be an all in one purchase.

Plus, it really sounds worth it. It's GH online, and more, by the sounds of it. I carried on playing GH for aaaaages. This thing has the potential to last way longer, with the community and downloadable update aspects.

    /excited

Wow, sounds potentially exceptional, if the guitar play is along the lines of GH.

Rumours around that this game is the reason why the GH2 guitar has a socket for a pedal.

    Oh, and Wireless Guitars!!!

Now let's just hope they don't make big promises and then have the franchise bought out so the suckers who buy it aren't left with sweet fuck all...

Id imagine that they both do the same thing :) But some people might like the lower one for solo's because they are thinner and can move around them faster, its just plain as day good design.

Also its a strat, ill buy it just for that...

You only use one set at a time :p
The lead and bass axes will now have 10 buttons; five for regular play in the usual position, with the rest closer to the guitar for special sections - presumably when you slide on your knees and rock to the heavens.

Ah so we're not expected to flail up and down? That's alright then. That's one of the reasons I don't play the real guitar!

In fact, just to summarise the cool points from the EG article:

-Four separate campaigns, for each of the instruments: guitar, bass, drum and vocal.
    -co-operative mode possible in campaigns.
-Each person playing online can pick a different difficulty setiing
-Online community features + you can pump your recordings to the world
-Guitar on the left of the screen, bass on right and drums down the middle - with the fret-boards now transparent so you can see what's going on in the background. Vocals will scroll across the top of the screen.
-Guitars have five different sound effects
-Singing detection picks up consonants and vowels
-Mic doubles as a tambourine \o/
-Drummers will use actual sticks to pound four coloured pads in front of them, as well as stamp on a kick-pedal tied into the peripheral. Like all others you'll get the chance to add your own frills, and if you suitably impress you'll get the chance to go free-form and trigger your "star power".
    -Character creation
-Your character will select a movement style, too, all motion-captured from famous stars like Axel Rose and Eric Clapton - and venues will number more than 40.
