    Gonna be here (Amsterdam) Mon-Fri next week and possibly the next couple of weeks after that

    Anyone around and fancy a pint sometime? Wednesday would be good, coincides with the England game!

    Also any ideas on things to see/do in the evenings? Don't really wanna get stoned as I'm meant to be working during the day, and my gf would kill me if I went anywhere near any sex shows :)

    I know it's cliched, but you really should have a wander around the red light district - you really won't believe your eyes. The only bad thing about it is that you get offered drugs about every 20 paces, I couldn't believe it to be honest.

    Also, there are some really nice bars in the area, but just be careful which one you go into.

    A river boat tour is a good way to see the city too: quite cheap and you get to see the nice areas in comfort.

    There’s loads to do that’s not sex/drugs related. The museums and galleries are well worth a look if that’s your thing, and even if it isn’t to be honest. The Van Gogh is a must.

    There’s a really cool cinema in the RLD which used to be a gothic cathedral. Definitely check that out. There’s an excellent jazz bar which the name of escapes me but shouldn’t be hard to find as it’s well known. Otherwise yeah, just wander round and soak up the atmosphere. Beautiful city it really is.

    boat trip and van gogh are good ideas cheers guys.

    will have to find out what time things close and see what i can do after work

    don't be too jealous - the great thing about being away with work is the free hotel and food, but the bad thing is having to do everything on your own, gets a little dull!

    plus titan quest runs slowly on my laptop :-P

    Really reccommend it, it's an incredible building and a very cool place to watch a film, especially if you see something that's kinda appropriate.

    It's only a small museum, but good fun. I liked the giant penis sculptures, made me laugh a lot.

    Paradiso is great venue for evening music events (live music from metal type stuff to Jools holland), it is off Leidseplein and they have a good website with all of the schedule.

    I know what you mean - we found a nice pub-style bar and got seats next to the window which overlooked a few 'ladies of the night' behind their glass doors. One was stunning and her next door neighbour rather unimpressive.

    Oddly enough, the ugly lady got far more clients in the 3 hours were were there than the fit one ...

    The ladies on the main strip are mostly fit, especially towards the middle where they are literally as nice as supermodels. Go down some of the alleys and you see the flip side of the coin though...

    The whole place was pretty shocking! There was a bestiality section too, as I remember. Or did I just imagine it?

    Nah, they probably won't even have Dutch subtitles, but that's the worst you can expect (assuming you see an American film, they do show Dutch ones as well).

    Amsterdam and rotterdam are rubbish, see the rest of the country instead. MUCH better.

    Heh, Amsterdam is an experience. A good one, at that.

    Just get into the habit of saying "No thanks mate" with a smile and you'll have no problems in the Red Light District.

    I can second (third? fourth?) the Van Gogh gallery. It's well worth the money.

    I really like the street markets they have on the weekends. Near Waterloosplein (spelling?) I think. Well worth a visit if you're able to.

    Rembrant's house is also worth going to, the gallery with his etchings is very good.

    The diamond quarter is also worth a visit, just to look through the windows of the shops at some of the jewellery and other items for sale.

    So stayed over here this weekend instead of going home and had the missus round too (just left her on a train to schnipol)

    lovely city, especially when the weathers nice like it was today.

    Went on the canal boats a few times, over to the sex museum, anne franks house, rembrandts house, the flea market at waterlooplein (yup you were right!), and just generally wandering round

    love the buildings and the architecture here, plus the fact that theres loads and loads of places you can get food and beer outside.

    I'm going to Amsterdam in July with a friend but it looks like our hotel (according to googlemaps) is 17mins from central Amsterdam by car.

    Are taxi drivers likely to try and overcharge?

    i call bollocks, i worked in amsterdam for 3 months and took the tram everywhere and i never once got mugged.

    lovely city. apart from on weekends. luckily i flew home for weekends ;D
