It really does look like a Manatee.

    This signature intentionally left blank.

'Giant' Manatee? Idiots, how can they not call it the Huge Manatee?

LB, you really are a massive geek.

    Oh.

A strange game. The only winning move is not to play.

Mobile Observatory is waaaay better for pretty much everything. Though admittedly the live view is better in google's.

(I would say that Mobile Observatory is better than a lot of PC software for amateur astronomy stuff)

Almost here! Will it hit something? Apparently not. All the same, I'd not want to be in the ISS.

Not long before this comet passes (relatively) close by too. Early March. It could be amazing! It could be boring.

Either way, we're not going to see either unless they change course and crash into us, because we live in the UK and it's always fckng cloudy and raining every time something interesting happens in the sky.

Aparently this one was small enough to carry and seems to have taken out windows for miles and even partly destroyed a building.

Some more Sonic Boom and some mild panic.

The really scary thing about this the sheer energy in something so small. Guesses place the sonic boom at around 85km up and took around 4 minutes to arrive at the buildings where it did all that damage.

Why does every car in Russia seem to have a video camera on the dashboard? Just about every crazy car crash clip is Russian.

If I saw that coming down I would completely shit myself. Having said that I saw a big fireball shooting over our flat once (we lived in the roof, Velux windows), and just jumped out of my seat whooping, the gf thought I was having some sort of fit....

    From the Guardian live stream:

"In Russia, everyone should have a camera on their dashboard. Itís better than keeping a lead pipe under your seat for protection (but you might still want that lead pipe) ...

Psychopaths are abundant on Russian roads. You best not cut anyone off or undertake some other type of maneuver that might inconvenience the 200-pound, six-foot-five brawling children you see on YouTube hopping out of their SUVs with their dukes up ... These fights happen all the time and you canít really press charges. Point to your broken nose or smashed windows all you want. The Russian courts donít like verbal claims. They do, however, like to send people to jail for battery and property destruction if thereís definite video proof ...

Dash-cam footage is the only real way to substantiate your claims in the court of law. Forget witnesses. Hit and runs are very common and insurance companies notoriously specialize in denying claims. Two-way insurance coverage is very expensive and almost completely unavailable for vehicles over ten years oldĖthe drivers can only get basic liability."

Those videos are incredible. And that was from a small chunk of rock 85km up in the sky, can't even imagine what Tunguska must have been like.

That's an amazing sight, I'm suprised they managed to keep driving normally seeing that in the sky. I'd be cacking my pants and swerving all over the road, especially with that sonic boom.

Somewhere a Russian glass salesman is dancing with joy.

I had wondered about those dashboard cameras that seem to make up the majority of crazy crash/near miss/random tank related gifs on the internet.

The sky apparently clear tonight around here, so I'm currently planning on carting my scope out to the middle of a field and see if I can catch DA14! Woo.

Probably won't see anything, of course. But even the prospect of not having clouds is quite exciting tbh.

If experienced the sonic boom those Russians had, I would shit my pants.
