As someone who didn't like Knights of the Old Republic, but loves Bioware's other games, including Neverwinter Nights 2 and the old classics, should I risk it? (PC version is finally out)

    QFT.

Think of the most overrated game you can think of. Its exactly half as overrated as Jade Empire.

I like KOTOR and found Jade Empire 'okay'. KOTOR was much better, despite the somewhat clatty controls and emo companions.

Jade Empire got more in common with Fable than with KOTOR. If you liked that, you may like JE too.

I got about a quarter of the way into it, got stuck, didn't know what to do next and never completed it.

I thought it was okay, just not great.

I really liked it. It's one of those games which has a loyal band of haters that follow it around though.

The best description for it is its more like a oriental version of Fable than Kotor. So if you liked Fable its likely you will like Jade Empire imo.

I liked JE well enough. Just don't expect it to be Baldurs Gate in fictional China.

NWN 2 from Bioware? Shame on you UncleLou.

Hmmm I loved Fable and I love everything that Bioware have done so I think I might give this one a try. Never did play it on the Xbox. Plus Metacritic seems to think its OK. Just about.

Which bit, if you can remember?

One of the reasons I was dissapointed was that I whizzed through it in a weekend, whereas KOTOR lasted me a solid month while i was 'between jobs'.

Another reason was that, coming straight off the back of KOTOR2, the lack of character customisation was shocking.

That and the fact that your partner AI was worse than Dom in GoW.

I say buy it. The haters only dislike it because IGN overhyped the game.

The hive-mind at RPGCodex hate it. That should be reccomendation enough.

    WELL. Yes. I am sorry.

I'll make it good again by saying Obsidian > Bioware. :)

Anyway, cheers all, bit surprised about so many rather negative comments.

Just to add JE works well on the 360 with backwards compatabilty. I even bought it for less than 5. Graphically I think it actually shows up some of the early 360 games.

I think total game play time was around 20-25 hours if you do most of the side quests.

I would be inclined to agree about Obsidian, if they ever released a game that was halfway finished, to match the writing.

I guess the negative voices didn't agree with the action game combat and the relatively short length of 15 - 20 hours. Writing wise I think it was as good as any other Bioware game I've played. Definately better than NWN 1, of course.

    Bollocks.

I dislike it because it's KotOR without Star Wars with crap combat.

Err... look it was a while ago, okay...

Iirc, it was a town, a port I think. I ended up there after doing a few bits elsewhere, then spent ages going around this port looking for something, definitely can't remember what. The game hadn't been out long, so no guides anywhere, and after spending several hours searching for whatever I needed, I couldn't find it and gave up.

Does this game work on 360 BC? Might be worth starting again at some stage. Though I also have Halo2 to play via the 360.

    Halo2 or Jade Empire?

    That is unbelievably patronising.

I bought it on release day without reading a single review, so confident was I that, after finishing KOTORII the week before, I was getting another epic experience......

The lack of Star Wars is a bonus not a downside.

Combat wise it was hardly Ninja Gaiden, but it worked well enough, IMO. Unspectacular but passable.

Something Star Wars > Something not Star Wars

    By default.

Still, I enjoyed what I played of JE (didn't get too far in) and I'd say it's at least worth a look.

I'd say no, just because there must be something better than an old and slightly average xbox game you could be playing surely?

    Not this week there isn't.

And I say it's pretty far from average. Not a classic but still quite good. 8/10.

It was hardly even Yie Ar Kung Fu.

    Average fight:

    Jump over oponents head
    Attack
    Opponent turns round
    Jump over opponents head
    Attack
    Opponent turns round
Realise you are spamming the same move over and over.
    Try another fighting style
    Get hit
    Jump over opponents head
    Attack
    Opponent turns round
Realise you dont use magic enough
    Try magic
    Nothing happens
    Jump over opponents head
Change to chi drain attack to get your chi back.
    Jump over opponents head
Carry on spamming most powerful move until death ensues.

The combat is actually better than many give it credit for.

On the face of it you have just one attack and one block button but once you realise that you can switch styles between about 10 different styles the combat button actually ends up giving you 10 different types of attacks. The ability to leap and roll about like a mad thing couple with all the fighting styles made the combat a lot of fun for me.

I also thought the voice acting and story were great. Well up to the standards set in Kotor.

It really is not the same sort of game as Kotor though so those expecting more Kotor might be disappointed.

I thought it was excellent, it had really good varied character combat and was very addictive.

Great storyline two and it shamelessly stole KoToR's good/evil system and used it to better effect.

You can play as loads of different characters to boot. :)

Until the end when you can make one good/evil decision which completely negates everything that went before it.

I am just bad mouthing it for the sake of it now. In the cold light of day, I would probably give it a high 6 maybe a 7, but I was just so disappointed I think I mentally drag it down to a 4.
