Yeah, I don't like ofiicial threads, either, but there are a million STALKER and a further million S.T.A.L.K.E.R. threads, many dating from 1914, so it makes sense to make a new one. :)

    Few links:

    - homepage

    - recent EG preview
    - recent IGN preview

Both IGN and EG sound surprisingly enthusiastic.

    - developer's homepage (new screenshots)

Does anyone have a link to the cancelled features during the development? If only to see if the brilliant sounding FAQs at the developer's homepage are still valid.

Really looking quite forward to this (again) especially after the positive previews on various sites.

    You bored T.G.?

Stalker does look interesting again after I lost interest because of all the delays. Might get this now.

When is this out again? If it's the end of March, then that's going to be an absolute corker of a month. SH4, this, C&C3, Enemy Engaged 2, Shivering Isle, GRAW2, War Front.

Gneh. My bank account is going to be -raped-.

Bollocks to that. I want new and shiny things all at once.

    Check this hands on analysis.

You will need to get past the initial 360 steering wheel review but after that its a very good article on S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

Anyone else here had it ordered on Play since they opened the £17.99 preorder in 2004?
Just checked now and the order has changed to the special pre-order tin version with loads of goodies which is going for £24.99, but I'm still getting mine for the original price!

Another positive hands on article, this time on Firingsquad. Closed the window so I can't be bothered to link. They played it on a P4 with a 6800 card, btw.:

Yes, it has taken six years for GSC GameWorld to give us their vision of a future nuclear disaster but itís looking like that long development time might not have been in vain. Based on our experience with the beta build, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl is aiming to combine deep RPG-like gameplay with the action elements of a FPS, not to mention an impressive looking visual and artistic graphical style.

Here's a video showing someone walking around the environment (wrecked trainyard). Very atmospheric but the footsteps are far too loud especially enclosed places (maybe they will tweak before release).

    Linky

    Its 178Mb.

Its been reviewed in this months pc zone. Got a respectable 85% sounds pretty good, a few problems with the script (translation??) and some of the characters seem lifeless. But the good far outweighs the bad so its a definate buy for me!!

Got hold of a copy recently. Bit rough around the edges (text overflowing in the menus, that kind of thing) but otherwise it's excellent. Very atmospheric, when you're out in the wilderness you can hear animals grunting and fighting around you. Couple them with the random anomalies that appear and it's incredibly spooky, especially while exploring the ruined buildings. First time I ran into an anomaly I didn't notice it until almost too late, was more careful after that, you can spot them from a distance and it's okay so long as you don't go blindly running about. Weapons feel right and the enemies are tough and not too stupid. Plenty of wildlife to shoot, too, and it's good seeing them fight each other or blunder into anomalies.

Performance is okay. I've got an FX-55, 2GB RAM and 7800GTX, runs reasonably well at 1920x1200 with AA and AF off and most of the detail sliders at the close to the highest setting. I'd guess that anyone with a fairly recent mid-range or high-end card and Core2Duo should be able to run it at close to high detail at 1280x1024.

For real!!? Is this single player? Frankly I am really surprised a 7800GTX runs it on max, especially at 1920x1200!! From all the people I have asked who have played the latest mutiplayer beta they are getting terrible framerates on max settings (at 1280res) with even x1900 cards... I was devestated when I heard this, but it's started to look up! I wonder if it's just the multi beta... Maybe single player is more ironed out?

    I have a 7800 GTX (256mb) too @ 500/1380. Athlon x2 4800+ (2.75ghz) CPU and 2gigs ram. If I can play absolute maximum settings at 1280x1024...brilliant!!

Your positive your getting this performance? Have you tried 1280x1024 with all settings to max possible? dx9?

No, I haven't, and I suspect that if you did max all the settings it would slow to a crawl. There's a slider for grass and view distance, I have both set to medium/low. If those were high I'd guess it would be reduced to a slideshow.

    More things I've found:

It thrashes your hard drive. Constantly.

Bugs ahoy! Already encountered several missions that I couldn't complete because objectives were either unclear or missing. Several times it pointed me toward a new area, but when it finished loading the arrow was pointing back where I'd come from. The awkward map doesn't help.

There are tons of weapons and ammo types. Just like Deus Ex!

Enemies respawn all the time. I'm hoping this can be tweaked in a file, because it's really irritating, I suspect it's a result of their fancy-pants AI thing that moves NPCs into empty areas, but they move awful quick. I was in a tunnel, and when I exited I popped out in the middle of a group of bandits in a area I'd cleared five minutes earlier.

Shame they didn't leave the vehicles in because travelling is a pain in the arse. At the beginning you can't run for long without tiring, and because you can't carry much you have to run back and forth between traders and loot. Not a good combination. Some of the missions are really far apart too, which wouldn't be so much hassle except they're often time limited.
Does get a bit easier once you find artefacts to improve your stamina, but still irritating.

I hope there is something to give your Stalker strength. By the time you're kitted out with guns, ammo, food (you have to eat) and health kits, you've not got much room left for loot. Start out with 40kg, if you go over 50kg you can't move, but between 40 and 50 you're much slower and stamina runs out fast. I've found it's a good idea to leave guns and ammo in storage containers near level load points, because different areas have different guns and it saves you carrying around a useless weapon. Some of the object stats are way out of whack, though. Should a loaf of bread weigh more than a box of bullets?

There's loads to do. I've been turning down side quests left and right because I want to focus on the main storyline, and everywhere you go you'll find hints pointing toward the location of hidden loot.

Cool, just came to this thread to see if this game has got an official release date (again) and seems my week off work from the 23rd March was well placed!

Not liking the reports of it being a system hog. I assumed, as dev must have started on the engine like 4 years ago, that it would run great on a mid-range rig like mine (3.4 p4, 1gig ram, x800xt) but maybe not.

SH4 is due to come out on the same day too - i may order another gig of ram for these 2 games, especially after hearing STALKER thrashes your HDD so much.

9/10 in the biggest PC games printmag here. Not that it's a great mag, but still. :) And an extra star for "brilliant atmosphere".

Having played the MP beta, if you've got a system this hammers it's very, very old.
