Ennio Morricone is certainly a genius.

I love a Primo beat like nothing else (perhaps a classic RZA beat comes close). I do sometimes wonder whether he phones it in a bit though. Perhaps he just makes it sound easy, but the Primo formula is incredibly repetitive. I guess if it works it works.

I swear sometimes he uses almost identical boom baps and intro scratches though:

I remember hearing 'aint no other man' for the first time and it kind of in the background. My subconcious recognised it as a primo beat almost instantly even if the rest of my brain didnt.

You could say the same thing about many producers I suppose. It's easy with Primo as he has been around forever, relatively speaking, and is prolific. His beats are distinctively his, for sure. So are Timbaland's, and the Neptunes - it's just that Primo's are basically all great, unlike everyone else ;)

Mmmmm, somewhere there's a line between "that sounds like a Primo beat" and "all Primo beats sound like that".

I think he might have slightly slipped over that line at some point, but the benchmark is so high I mostly don't care. That said, nothing he's done since the late 90s has really grabbed me in truth, and that is starting to be quite a long time ago.

Random shout out for Slick Rick's "The Art of Storytelling" album. Just fancied a listen and remembered how much I loved this when it came out. Seriously good album. Great production and Rick is an absolute master of the art. Ridiculously underrated. One of the most intricate and interesting rhymers of all time.

Good collaborations on there with the likes Outkast, Snoop and Nas too.

What is it with everyone in this thread :).

Just listened to about five of the above YouTube links. I can't comment on any of the rappers abilities because I couldn't listen past all the boring production.

Lyrics are so important (obviously) but i can't feel it if these cheap beats ruin it. Sadly I'm missing out on some great mcs but you can't have a great mc without great beats and you can't have a rubbish mc with great beats.
I like my beats either hype, aggressive or dirty. (of late thinking beats like

    Numbers on the board. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=DawrlSwHUiM

    Fuckwithmeyouknowigotit. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6boMS4KtnNE

    New slaves.

I'm late to the show but I just purchased kendrick lamar - good kid maad city album, damn that is hot. Except for a couple of tracks the production is brilliant and I like how the album is a story told from his perspective when he was 17. Tracks like backseat freestyle and maad city, oh damn.

More Premier. This beat is lovely. Just an instrumental, I wasn't feeling the rapper on the full track

Not sure about that premier beat, although most of the album the ownerz has excellent beats.

She's just a nice girl, in the wrong place.

    Danny Brown's Old has leaked!

Going to give it a run on Spotify - XXX is the best hip hop album I've heard since OBFCLII and Madvillainy so my hype meter is nearly off the charts.

I'd be very surprised if he topped it, though.

Really enjoying this Granville Sessions record.

    http://granvillesessions.bandcamp.com/

The are a London based live band (you know, with instruments and that), and they're pretty great.

Edit: Also, Oliver Sudden is the best new pun based rap name in quite some time.

Saw Jay Z last night. Slightly disappointed he didn't play longer but it was definitely quality over quantity, played so many great hits and got the crowd going really well. Empire State of Mind and Izzo were particular highlights.

    She dives for cheese pasties

What do you think? I think it is pure dope, one of the best tracks in years. Like the minimalist video as well, nice stroll through compton in the middle of the night.

    Both verses are near perfection.
