    See cubed3, which says:

Buena Vista Games have announced that it will be publishing Anno 1701 on the Nintendo DS. Developed by Keen Games, the title will launch in Europe and Australasia in Q2 2007.

"We are looking forward to building a strong relationship with the team at SUNFLOWERS to expand and develop the gaming experience that ANNO 1701 offers," said Thierry Braille, vice president and general manager, Buena Vista Games EMEA. "With BVG's expertise in publishing a broad portfolio of video games for the entire family and titles for the Nintendo DS, ANNO 1701 is an optimal addition to our portfolio because it appeals to both males and females alike, and also attracts younger as well as older gamers."

"ANNO 1701 stands for great quality and extraordinary gameplay," said Wilhelm Hamrozi, CEO SUNFLOWERS. "When expanding the property onto other platforms, we don't simply port the game design, but we develop new concepts that satisfy the familiar high standards in terms of quality and gameplay appropriate to the platform", he continued. "We are delighted about this collaboration and view Buena Vista Games as the ideal partner to begin a sensible expansion of our ANNO brand onto other platforms", Hamrozi concluded.

The Anno 1701 world is based on the PC title by Sunflowers. This is the very first venture onto the DS for the popular empire-building title. Set between the 17th and 18th centuries, the game is based on creating, building and developing civilisations. If you want to check out some screens of the game, you can check out a batch that were released a few months back by clicking 'Game Page' at the top of this news page.

We’ll hopefully have some more details on Anno 1701 for you soon, with a review coming your way later this year...

Seems people wanting more "western" games are starting to get heard.

Not much of a looker, is it? Still, that's hardly the point.

It has a certain Caesar 3/Settlers rustic charm to it...

Ooh, there's a thought - Caesar 3 on the DS would be nice.

Looks lovely, to me. Stuff like this is the reason I bought a DS.

    More screenshots courtesy of Gamefront.

I'm very pleased by all that German text on the shots. That means I won't have to wait for a localized version.

I should get me one of those newfangled DSlites to go with it.

If you can read this you really need to fiddle with your forum settings.

Just had a quick 5 mins of this and am quite impressed. Has a good feel to it and the stylus control was good. It seems to have a bit of depth although i didn't have a clue what i was doing so will have to play through the story mode.

Just checked the Sunflowers site and they state it will be released on friday, but amazon.de apparently shipped copies yesterday and is now sold out.

EDIT: Linked to the German site, here is the English site should someone need more information.

The only problem is that I've really played the PC version a lot, and not too long ago, and while this will certainly be lovely (just read a few scans of a German printmag review that gave it 86%), it'll be essentially the same, and stripped down.

Now of course that's exactly what it wants to be, I am just not too sure if I'd actually be really motivated to play it. I want it, though. :p

Same as Lou really, I put a loads of hours into the PC version. I'm sure if its close to the PC version it will be utterly fantastic and anyone with a passing interest should buy it.

As much as I love the Anno series and this type of game none of them have ever come close to Settlers 3 for me because of the little silly touches that aren't really that important but make a good game. Things like seeing all your actual resources being shifted around the place by your settlers who are busy sawing, hammering carrying, clearing land for building, seeing the frameworks go up and all that. I did like the Naval trading side of Anno though, spot on.

I've only played 1503 on PC (and really liked it), but wasn't there a cart that moved around the resources and you could see your guys sawing / raising sheep / mining etc. ?

It's been a while, but I'm pretty sure.

Yes. One of the rare times we Euro's get a game before the Yanks. I get bored of importing all the time.

Never played the PC version. One of those games I just haven't got around to playing. Settlers is also coming out for the DS.

It's not so rare anymore, it happens even with games that come from north American developers. Feels pretty good, though. :)

Kind of, but they are more just repeating animations rather than seeing, say, a production line of weapons swing into action after the last bit of wood or stone has been delivered to the last building in the chain.

In Settlers you can track as a single grain harvest gets delivered on screen to a pig farm, then the pig gets taken to the slaughterhouse, the meat of the pig gets delivered to the mine, the iron from the mine gets delivered to the Smithy then watch as the smithy makes a batch of weapons then finally the finished weapons get delivered to the barracks or storehouse all in real time as it were. Its really nicely done as opposed to the way Anno does it where you plonk down buildings pre-built for example.

It's a really minor thing but one that niggles me a lot :D

After having played the introductory campaign, I have very high hopes for this game. It's deep, it's varied, it's immersive. Really, really well done and quite unique as a Western strategy title on the platform.

    Kudos Sunflowers.
