    I thought the backup process allowed you to restore locked saves to the same machine that they originally came from. All the locking does is make sure you can't transfer the save to a different PS3.

    I'm not 100% sure on that, but I'm fairly certain that my Demon Souls save backed up and was restored without any problems.
    Good point, not sure if the OP is going to do a backup though.

    Is anybody else having terrible download speeds?

    I downloaded Rayman Origins demo in about 10 minutes the other day, at a rate of 1mb every 2 seconds.

    Two days later (Thursday) I tried to download the Sonic and 007 demos. They were taking 32 seconds per 1mb. Nothing has changed, no router, no nothing. I'm connecting wirelessly, as I can't connect wired at the moment, and I know that's slower, but I was getting 1mb every two seconds just 48 hours earlier.

    Tried again yesterday, it was 57s for every 1mb.

    I'm on O2. I've done a connection test via the PS3 network settings and getting 1.5mbps (I get 2.9 on my line, but as it's wireless and upstairs, I can understand it being 1.5mbps). However when I try a speedtest on the PS3, I get 2.4mbps. I'm also getting nowhere near the 1.5mbps for downloading demos. More like 0.015mbps.

    I find PSN in general very spotty. And it makes no different whether wired or wireless.

    At it's best it matches Xbox live, at it's worst it may as well be on a dial up.

    I sat and timed it for 10 minutes.

    I got extremes of 1mb downloaded in 14 seconds, right up to 1mb downloaded in 1min 22 seconds. All in 10 minutes. Never a router drop out. Ridiculous.

    I've been wanting to do this for a while now and with the help of ifixIt.com I tor (?) down my 60gb Launch PS3 (not all the way, just down to the fan) and gave it a good clean with compressed air and put it all back together again.

    I was a little worried about doing it, but it only took 30 minutes and it's all back together and running so quietly.

    If anyone else fancies it here is a helpful link...

    I've got to run the dyson round the kitchen table now as there was so much dust in there. It's all over the bloody place. :)

    My old man was watching a blu ray today which froze after twenty minutes (the drive was whirring).
    He turned it off and since then it won't read any CDs, games, DVDs or blu rays.
    I've tried a restore system files thing to no avail. It's a 3 year old system. Can anyone recommend a site for the lasers? I'm guessing it's this. I'll open up and try to clean it first mind...

    You dare to strike Scurrcules!?

    eBay has plenty of replacement bluray drives. I'm not sure of anywhere else.

    It's a real sinch to replace too. Just use that link I posted above.

    Just got a PS3 (new 320gb slim).

    Should the drive make a loud 'buzz buzz/whiring' noise when reading discs?

    It seems strangley loud but could be standard.

    Depends how close you are sitting to it.

    If you're sitting right next to it, then, almost certainly, nothing to worry about.

    But if you're 10 feet away on the other side of the room and can hear it...

    Is there an easy way to use the PS3 pad on my PC? Ideally I want to use it to play a few Steam games...

    OK, so I'm a bit PC illiterate, so I've downloaded XPadder and MotioninJoy's DS3 tool, but neither can 'find' the plugged in pad.

    Any idiot-guide like suggestions, please?

    Edit: Fixed!! Found my idiot's guide here

    Is there a way I can update a PS3 game without the disc (not including burning the update on to a disc)?

    I took my PS3 over my Dads to download the Skyrim updates as I only have 3G internet at my house.

    When I opened the case I realised the disc was in my Brothers PS3.

    I can't burn the update on to a disc as I don't have any.

    I leave my PS3 controller on top of my PS3 and my cat has been knocking it off lately.

    Last night while browsing the PSN Store, I could clearly hear something rattling inside it (the controller, not my cat). All the buttons are working, and it's not a dualshock, so it isn't anything to do with vibration.

    Any ideas? I can live with it, but it is driving me a bit mad.

    Those pads are full of plastic clips that hold stuff in place (the ones you usually have to pry open with a screwdriver). When I've had that in the past it has just been one of these clips that has snapped off.

    The real solution to your problem is to get rid of your cat. There are two positives here:

    1. No more cat

    2. No more controllers getting wrecked

    No need to thank me :p

    @Darkight

    Thanks. I hope it's something reasonably harmless.

    @mikew1985

    The bastard sleeps behind my PS3 for the heat when it's downloading something overnight. I might take your advice :)

    Does the PS3 slim come with the multi av cable thing? Moved the PS3 to the kitchen for wireless netflix but the monitor has a shit in built speaker and the only speaker I have doesn't have optical?

    Bloody PS3 box is 200 miles away anyway so looks like I'm going to have to go out and buy one.

    Recently replaced my YLOD old ps3 with a new 160gb model. Recovered my profile and re-downloaded stuff I had bought etc and also re-synched my trophies.

    My previous trophy details seem all present and correct, but oddly when I start playing a game that I already had some on (skyrim for example) the trophy info for that game gets wiped as if starting for the first time.

    I doesn't bother me, partly because trophies are a bit of nonsense anyway, but anyone ever seen this? Do I have to 'activate' it through account management or something? ta.

    Edit to answer Mowgli's question - my slim came with a standard AV cable like a ps2 and a scart block adapter.

    @MysteryLamb

    The trophies 'wipe' the first time you play a game (one that has been previously played on your account on an older system) on a new system, but you just resync them again form the server and they'll reappear (even if you've popped a few previously attained anew, these will vanish and the original trophy will be present) and stay present.

    Confused myself there :D

    Where the fuck is the stupid cable I need to charge the controller for my PS3 that I haven't turned on since December? And why do I have to turn it on to charge it, it's a ridiculous design flaw.

    Connect it to your PC, and it'll charge as well.

    And any cable will do. Can't expect it to hold a charge since then!
