get ps3 media server, it's better than tversity.

same answer for your second question. run them through PS3MS and it'll convert them on the fly

PS3MS never works for me. Tried through my homeplugs and wireless but it can't handle them. Have resorted to USB or copying to the HDD

They start to play but buffer too much. Had the same problem with 3 different routers. Not sure what I'd change either, I can access the files no bother

The PS3 rapes networks depending on what your streaming, it's a bug they haven't fixed since 2.3

    Could be unrelated.

if you're trying to stream even semi-hd files from your pc you need at least a dual core. Normal 700mb rips should go from anything though...

    I normally copy anyway

Even shit-arsed 700MB rips don't work. Thought it might be the PC, but upgraded to quad-core/4GB RAM and still nada. Frustrating but nothing a 10 16GB USB stick can't solve

Just got one for Xmas. What is recommended in terms of making it more of a media hub thingy. I'm downloading something called Tversity now. WHat else do I need?

Also I notice a lot of my videos from my external HDD are "not supported". Is there a codec pack thingy I can get?

    Many Thanks

    A Noob

    Here are the supported codecs...
    Linkey!

You also have to activate or agree to t&c's for some of them (divex, being one). I believe you do this in the System Settings option on the XMB.

I never really got the whole streaming thing, so I just upgraded the HDD and loaded everything right onto the PS3. I think it's the whole having the PC & PS3 on at the same time. Just didn't seem right.

And for the unsupported files, mkv's for instance, I just used tsmuxer (google it) to convert to mt2s (or something). :/

    Cheers.

    Any other interesting software/add-ons?

Can I use my spotify on it?

Yeah, lastfm & spodify both work. Via the PS3 browser.
But the PS3 has it's own Music library. VidZone (free) & qurizoty (or whatever) is a sub's based "Cloud" music library. Not entirely sure how it works but I think basically if you have any "Playstation Networked" Sony product you can listen to your music (ie. Sony TV's or bluray players etc...)

If you are into movies there are a few options...
Load your HDD up with your downloaded movies (ah hem!!!) :)
Playstation Network Movie Store - Some decent selections in there at the going rates (maybe a little cheaper than iTunes)
Mubi - A film noir type sub based option. offering lots of "different" movies, some you might have never thought to watch. Worth a browse.
LoveFilm - this is pretty new and if you already have a subscription you can access their live player which streams unlimited movies right to the PS3 (subscription levels apply)...

So basically lots to discover really.

So for spotify what do I do exactly? Can I just download the exe onto the PS3?

Sorry, I thought lastfm & spodify were web based!?

I thought you just pop the web address in the browser. You can't download exe files onto the ps3.

    Hi lads
I have sold my ps3 so I'm getting it to reformat the hard disc, can I just ask why does it take around 14 hours to do this and once it is done is that all I need to do before I box up and send off ? I have no credit card linked to the system.
Thank you in advance for help you gurus ;)

A game-related question: do I need to know the previous MGS games in order to enjoy MGS4 / understand its story?

Looking at upgrading my HDD from a 30gb to something a lil meatier.

I'll find a guide online but any recommendations as far as which one I should go for? Anything I should look out for besides 2.5"?

Generally you want to keep the RPM (5,400) the same so not to create any more heat.
    This is great value...
    Play.com

You could perhaps search around for cheaper, but I am not sure it will get much better than that.
You could go for a 500gb one and spend a bit extra. Although, I did upgrade to a 320gb a month or so after release and its still going strong and plenty of space left on it.

If you read the forums over at psx scene, lots of people having problems with the WD Scorpio drives. Various reports of stuttering etc.

I have also read of people having problems with various makes etc. I'll just find one that people agree doesn't cause any hassles. That Scorpio looks good though.

    Thanks for the replies.

I'd strongly advise not to bother with the Western Digital Scorpio drives.Had one for my Ps3 and had many issues with it not being detected at various random times.Ended up putting it in my laptop and buying a Toshiba drive which works perfectly to this day.

I think you would be pretty unlucky to get a duff one.
WD are fine, I've got three 1tb external drives on my desk at work (my books) and one 500gb portable drive (my passport), and obviously the 320gb in the PS3, not a single problem with any of them... :/

I can get hold of the WD pretty easily so I may just go for that one.

Will have a look for the Toshiba though.
