Does itunes let you run two ipods off the same PC? I don't think it does, which put the 40gig ipod owners from getting one of these.

Yes it does (at least, it does from a Mac and I can't see why it'd be different for a PC).

And Tommyc352 ... what do you mean it's not a Smartphone? What on earth is missing?

It is very pretty! My only concerns would be the practicality, my phones take a beating from constant use and I dont know how long this hot tamale would last.

How often will they release new models? Companies like Nokia, Samsung and SE release new models constantly. Are Apple planning on doing the same?

Yes, but was it ever any more than a concept?

I don't think it ever reached the market, but that was a fully working prototype. In the photo, it was playing a version of marble madness/mercury/monkeyball. marble runs round maze, tilt the phone to make the marble move.

The web browser it had scrolled pages as you tilted the phone.

In the Keynote Jobs said that they were planning a 3G model... so I'm sure there will be regular updates, just as Apple update their iPods and computers pretty regularly. Probably not as often as SE etc (but then if Apple release less models but with less moronic flaws - all my phones have weird glitches that make me think QA is non-existent - then who cares?)

Honestly, does anyone use 3g - i personally don't - tho im put off by the cost to be honest,

But most people will just look at phone and tarriff charges anyway - and im sure the phone operators will be offering all sorts of deals to get people to buy one from them instead of the others...

Tis true - tho i was thinking more of 3rd party software - I wasn't sure if you could add it to the phone etc if you wanted to, in contrast to other phones.

People who want a new phone every six months. To me it seems as if the Mobile phone business moves way faster than all comparable technology markets. I mean last year there where about 3.2 million phones sold in Sweden, despite the fact that penetration rates hit 100 % years ago. I wonder if Apple will be able to keep up.

I mean I'm sure it will be a good phone with a really slick interface, despite my eye-rolling at the marketing hyperbole in the other thread, but, unlike the market for hard-drive music players, Apple won't have first mover advantage this time.

Depends what you mean by 'running two ipods off the same PC" - I have a 20gig iPod and my gf has a 4 gig iPod and we both use iTunes on my PowerBook to keep them loaded with stuff. You just need to set the iPod to not automatically update when you plug it in.

The differentiator is what a (smart)phone can do, not which OS it runs.

    Smartphone:

A smartphone or sphone is any electronic handheld device that integrates the functionality of a mobile phone, personal digital assistant (PDA) or other information appliance. This is often achieved by adding telephone functions to an existing PDA (PDA Phone) or putting "smart" capabilities, such as PDA functions, into a mobile phone. A key feature of a smartphone is that additional native applications can be installed on the device. The applications can be developed by the manufacturer of the handheld device, by the operator or by any other third-party software developer.

I doubt it. MS are already heavily involved in the software side of the mobile phone industry. I assume they'll focus on competing in that niche.

With the new product cycle so short in the world of mobile phones Apple will have to release/update a new iPhone every 6 months or be outdated very quickly.

Good luck affording one if you're not a posh businessman about town. Most of those natty features look to be network dependant.

Expected more to be honest.. and i'm a machead :(

5 hours video and something time.. 16 hours music. You can probably reduce that to 4 hours factoring apple's usual generous estimations.

And that you'd throw the phone against a wall well before 16 hours if you were listening to James Blunt.

Internet browsing via mobile network is insanely expensive, emailing and that sort of jazz changes from network to network. Call holding, conferencing etc are also network dependant and require you to fork out extra.

When are you going to be in a free accessible WiFi hotspot and not have your computer nearby? Chances are it's at home. Yeah if you're desperate you can go to starbucks or wherever and pay to use theres. But again, more money.

Also, as a basic phone it's just as easy to bring up your contacts and ring someone with a set of buttons. I'd say it was easier to be honest. You don't need a touch screen to call yer mum!

Yes, it's more. But the other main 'feature' is music and video watching. Does that really require a touch screen? i don't do much 'multi-touching' when i'm listening to my favourite james blunt CD's.

As stated, on the go internet access isn't going to be straight forward. Which would realistically be the main draw for having a touch screen.

I'm not doubting that it isn't a nice bit of git. It's just bloated and over reaching. And expensive. And not *that* revolutionary once you take away OSX. S'all fancy UI stuff.
