Often see parents going to game because their kid wants a new game or console and they just have no knowledge on gaming so they go to Game.

I don't even bother with Game anymore. In Nottingham we have two local competitors in Grainger Games and Playtime and both are cheaper, more competent AND not going to try and flog you insurance on your new consoles despite the fact that you work for the company providing the insurance and can get 50% off anyway.

I tried to get the ps4 1tb bundle the other day and as they didn't have driveclub in stock they couldn't sell it. So he just said 'Try Amazon' and walked off. Fair enough I suppose.

Dishonored 2 is 20 in GAME at the moment, checked online, 'stock low' so took a walk in to the shop.

Ask the guy at till for a copy, he walks out the back, appears 5 seconds later and says 'nah mate we are totally out of the PC version'.

So am walking out of the shop and see 4 PC cases sitting, take it up to the till again and ask a different girl if I can have a copy.

She walks out the back, reappears 30 seconds later with a handful of copies and hands one to me.

So yep, looks like we still have to deal with a smattering of c***s in GAME, good to know nothing has changed.

He probably just walked out the back, scratched his arse, and then walked back out again.

You were not buying CoD or FIFA therefore he did not know what you were after.

Before I make the effort of setting foot in one of their stores, does anyone have experience of how they handle the "we won't be beaten on trade ins" thing?

Game and CEX are pretty much next door to each other and although CEX obviously give much more, Game sell PSN credit. So the ideal for me would be CEX trade in price to spend at Game.

Do I just go to Game and show them the competing prices on my phone or do they require hours of 3rd party verification to make it difficult for all involved?

I've always just shown the price on a phone and it's been fine. If I'm trading in a lot I'll add to a basket on the site in advance so they're all in one list.

    @TheRealBadabing

Depends on the Game some will accept a link to the CEX website, some will ask you for something stupid like a statement from CEX and others (like my local) will tell you to fuck off.

If CEX is next door a list from their website should be enough. (Note CEX reprice things fairly regularly so it may need to be the same day).

The last few times I've been into game and asked them to match CEX they had an ipad on standby with the CEX website up.

When I traded in a shitload of 360 games before Christmas, I printed out my basket from the CEX website and gave them that, they didn't go online to check any of the prices and just used the list. The only games on the list that they didn't match were the couple that they sold for less than the CEX trade in price. All in all it was a fairly painless transaction.

Yeah I always use the price match with no trouble. Actually fair dues to GAME, other day I traded ff15, wanted the price match but the guy said we are giving more. I stood there with a very surprised wide eyed face.

"Hi, my wife preordered some switches and some games"
    "OK..."
"At the time you took her money*, you said it wasn't refundable, and she's not guaranteed to get one for launch day"
"Yes, but let me check the name, as we have our allocation now"
"here's the receipts, it's for two..."
"...oh yes I know which one that is, we saw that order this morning, we'll have both confirmed reserved for her, although we only allow one per customer"
"Oh thanks. While I'm here, do you price match the games because..."
    "no"
"Ah OK, so the money she paid for the reservations can I move that over to the consoles"
"yes, but we can't refund the..."
"I'm aware of your policy. Thanks"

What was unusual was how she'd managed to preorder two, given their policy is only one per customer. She explained to them at the time that it was for two customers; her two children. They didn't seem able to argue against that position so they sold them.

*20 for each switch, and 5 for each game

They just said you can use the money on anything, just can't get it refunded.

    Jesus.

As bad as Gamestop are in Ireland, all deposits are fully refundable (via the same means that you paid for them with) even after release date and you change your mind/buy somewhere cheaper.

    C**ts.

Picked up a preowned copy of Final Fantasy XV today because I had some credit lying about, I get home and realise the disc is so fucked it won't install. Amazing.

For anyone who gets Game to price match CEX, was told at lunchtime that they are stopping it from Monday 27th Feb.

Just another way to make the company even more uncompetitive

Same here, not that I've shopped there for a while but, that was the one thing you could take advantage of.. there's no reason to go there at all now.

Yeah I very rarely go there myself, but I do sometimes go trade in a load of games I have sitting around. The only thing that makes the price of the games palatable.

first time i've been in game in ages. traded some non-exclusive ps4 games in for credit on their gamewallet thing.

"Yeah mate you can use it to order horizon" .. cool

So i'm home and no, you can't fucking use it. Not for preorders.

I can use it once the game is on sale to order online. WTF?
I can go back to store and pre order & then go in a 3rd time to collect it OMGWTF?
I can just go and use it in store on release date and pick it up that way. *sigh*

looks like i'm going back out Wednesday morning first thing ...

Edit* Ignore the last repeated bit, fecking mobile app is playing up and won't let me edit properly!!

It's a shame, I remember an online retailer that started his business in his bedroom, and then moved to a warehouse about 5 minutes walk from my parents house.

He called his company "Gameplay", and on a cold and windy day in 1995, I took that 5 minute walk in the hopes of picking up the PS1's greatest fighting game of that year, Tekken.

I was told by other stores that it wasn't released for a few more days, but I decided to go anyway, as I'd never been to a store that actually specialised in video games before!

I walked in and the floor was literally piled high with games, then I noticed loads of people on telephones and one guy knelt on the floor with pens behind his ears. I asked him if they had Tekken yet, and he simply said "I think it's that pile over there mate, just step round and get yourself one".

I navigated the varying heights of game towers until I noticed the pot of gold I was after. I handed him some notes and got various change back. I wasn't really concerned about if I had the right change or not, as I was simply amazed with the experience and the towers of games I had just seen with my own eyes. Plus MOTHERFUCKING TEKKEN!!!!!

I used his company for a good few years after that, getting all the latest and greatest titles at an online price, but with the beauty of being able to walk in and get it a few days before it was properly released.

Then GAME took them over in 2004 and bastardized everything I loved about the place!

    Fuck you GAME, fuck you!

I didn't get chance to buy anything else from him as GAME subsequently took them over in

So they are getting rid of one of the few things they have going for them.
