I'm aware how much of a rip-off they are when trading in and I don't trade very often at all. I like to see a collection of games on my shelf and know that they are there for whenever I fancy delving back into something.

A clear out, however of old stuff I haven't played in months or even years and will be very unlikely to play again is a different story - I don't see the harm in getting at least something back for items that are basically gathering dust and needlessly cluttering up my house.

Just had this gem of an email from Game.co.uk regarding a customer survey (which didn't work) :
    Dear Customer,

Thank you for taking the time to complete our survey on customer services. As you may have noticed there was a small issue in the build of the survey (if you had chosen "order query" in question 4) which did not allow you to complete the rest of the survey. This has now been fixed, so if you could take a couple of minutes to give it another go we would really appreciate it.

Remember there is a great chance to win a 250 GAME giftcard. We have extended the completion date until Wednesday this week.

Please open with the below link:
    (Link removed)

    Many thanks,

    Byron Goulder
    Senior Insight Manager
    GAME Retail LTD
The list of recipients, ie other customers, was in full view. I know internet security counts for shit these days, but really?

    Followed 20 minutes later by
Byron Goulder would like to recall the message, "GAME Customer Services Survey".
Over 400 emails disclosed, bit late?

As I posted in the COD Ghosts thread, Game has the PS4 version on sale for a whopping 59.99, in HMV it is 52.99. How are they still in business?!?!

I was in the Crawley branch at the weekend and decided on a whim to trade in a sealed Skylanders Swap Force starter kit (PS3) in order to get the dark edtion. I had looked on the CEX web site where they give 44.

    Game offered 20!

    I said "Is that all?"

The guy behind the counter looked really embarrassed. Poor sod.

    I decided to keep it.

@AceGrace Especially given that as you trade it in sealed, they will sell it on as 'new'.

If they had taken it I would have probably unsealed it and inserted a pube or two when they were not looking. ;-)

Shouldn't they have trade matched CEX if there's one nearby?

@santashi You generally now have to provide "written proof", i.e. a printed till offer from CEX, but CEX know that GAME have a "beat anyone by 1" thing going on so they won't supply one hoping that you'll come back to them for the higher trade-in price.

CEX list all buy prices on their website, if you just browse to the page on your phone browser Game will accept that.

    @Zomoniac

Yeah, I just display the prices on my phone. There's no way i'd be trading in with them if I couldn't price match.

I unfortunately have my PS4 pre-ordered through them - I'm wonder how much they'll charge for the mega bundle?

@Zomoniac There's been plenty of anecdotal claims that some GAME stores won't accept that, saying you have to get absolute confirmation that the local store will take it in on that day at that price.

I just take my iPod in with the items I want to trade in in the cart on the CEX website. They've always price matched so far, and seem to anticipate it.

@YenRug Good luck getting any store to print out their prices so that you can get stuff from someone else. CEX certainly don't and never have done that for anyone. I know for a fact Gamestation used to accept the website info although Game may have a different policy.

    For the emperor!

I've gone into Game before with CEX prices on my phone, and they've accepted it with no fuss. The very minimal business they do get from me would dry up in an instant otherwise.

Yeah I've done it with my phone and had no problem. The price match promise does say it's down to the managers discretion but If anyone gives you problems then ask them for their complaints/head office number and cal them there and then. They'l soon shit themselves and get it done.

I used to work for GS so I've also done loads of trade in price matches.

    Christ almighty.

... the new GAME website somehow looks even worse than it previously did!

The squared and rectangular design of their previous efforts was perfectly fine, me thinks.

I scanned around 30 old-middle aged Xbox360 titles, in using their mobile app.

Total value of games was around 130 quid.

Went to store, with a mint xbox360 slim 250gb, all the gubbins (save a 1 quid hdmi cable!) and PS move controllers, 2 PS3 cameras, 2 bluetooth keyboards for DS3's, and a couple of Xbox360 joypads (minus battery covers).

    Result?

They refused the pads without covers (fair enough)

Charged me 7.99 for a Game component cable,

Total value of trade in ?

    186 in store credit.

I did it, feeling I should as I'm getting both next gens soon - but two weeks later I'm still raging at being shafted quite so harshly.

    Last. Time. Ever.

    Game, I despise you.

I just did something similar. 30 odd games, most valued at 1.50 or so. In store they gave an extra 20% for a total of 115.

Not a lot but they are worth exactly nothing sitting on my shelves. They are only going to be worth even less each day as GAME are about to find out. Thanks for the 8.40 you gave me for Lord of the Rings Conquest! Swings and Roundabouts innit?

Just offloaded about 40 very old 360 and Wii games plus 3 vita and the recent Tomb Raider for just under 90.

Was not expecting much to be honest but was never going to play any of those games again. So fairly happy.

You're all mental, trade in at cex you get at least a third more for your goods.

But it would cost me 15 and 2 hours of my life to get to a CEX. And then the games I get in the trade would be 2nd hand.

The only time I go into Game is for either steam or PSN credit. Their software prices are too expensive for the trade value they offer, which quite frankly is a rip off.

I just did a comparison of a load of my games I'm wanting to trade in, and this isn't actually true. I put in about 15 games, and GAME was, on avergae, actually slightly better. Couple that with the 25% extra they do and they're a clear winner for a lot of games.

Having said that, CEX are routinely better for newer games. I've made a "profit" on a few occasions on new releases.
