In another thread earlier I made a post saying I'd put on my heart rate monitor and play some Wii sports. Well I'm done and here are some results for half an hour of each activity. Oh, all games were played standing up with full use of stupid looking motions... =)

Sitting at desk / talking on phone / browsing web:
    67 Kcal burnt
80 /106 heart rate (bpm avg / max)

Playing Wii Sports Tennis - 2 players (vs computer):
    99 Kcal burnt
    96 / 112 heart rate (bpm avg / max)

    Playing Wii Sports Tennis - 2 players (1 v 1):
    112 Kcal burnt
    98 / 121 heart rate (bpm avg / max)

Playing Wii Sports Boxing - 1 player (vs computer):
    165 Kcal burnt
    109 / 125 heart rate (bpm avg / max)

    Playing DDR - Heavy Mode
    326 Kcal burnt
    150 / 183 heart rate (bpm avg / max)

So there you go... playing Wii sports Boxing burns around 2.5x the calories you burn sitting on your ass surfing the web. I'm pretty fit so I imagine the difference would be a fair amount bigger if you hardly get any exercise at all. Putting the numbers above in simple terms... I'd have to play for just over 2 hours to burn the same amount of calories (230 kcal) as in mars bar. That's taking into account the number of calories I would have normally burnt sat on my ass. =)

    For comparison I'm 5' 10", 68kg (10st 10lbs) and 13% body fat.

Oh... and losing 1lb of fat takes about 3500 calories - that's about 18 hours of Wii sports boxing (numbers assume I wouldn't be eating more and once again counting the calories I'd normally burn doing nothing.)

hehe, cheers dude, those figures are interesting, especially in comparison to the DDR game! :-D

You should email EG and ask to do an article about this - just to show that yes, playing Wii does burn more calories than just sitting down (so will be good for the kids), but no, playing wii isn't a ludicrously tough workout the way some of the Wii naysayers make it out to be!

    :-)

Thanks for posting that - very interesting.

Any idea how much more benefit is gained if you're ordinarily, for instance, a pathologically lazy chain-smoking overweight layabout?

    For instance.

If I could go back in time about 4 months I'd tell you. I'm still a chain smoker though. =P

Was thinking... I might update this later with half hour on a normal console game for comparison. =)

It would be interesting to see the results for playing a marathon session of Zelda.

Yeah but come on, they were games journalists saying that. And they break into a sweat putting their socks on in the morning!

Well for any shortcomings that the Wii may or may not have, this is a positive thing for sure :)

Funnily enough I got my two new dance pads today from Holland. Just replacements for my soft pads but they seem ot have upgraded them a little from the last set I bought. Good stuff.

Hmm I wonder if anyone's measured Karaoke Revolution? Surely the sweating alone before its your turn to get up should shed a few pounds.
