The FedEx guy is now my new best friend, because he just handed me the package about one minute ago!

First impressions: it's heavy. Package weight 17 lbs, and you can tell. The game boxes are dinky though, really cool and the seethrough plastic doesn't look as tacky as I was expecting. I'll be back in a bit...

Thread has got fairly long now, and there are some points where it rambles, so for anyone just coming in here is a contents page:

Page 1 - First impressions of the packaging and game cases/appearance of console/feel of controller
Page 2 - I start to worry about the PSU voltage
Page 3 - Some comparison pictures and more about the look and feel of the controller
Page 4 - I really can't decide whether to wait for a stepdown or not
Page 5 - more deliberating and some amusing google hits for 'plug'
Page 6 - I decide to wait, Trip Skyway gets one and gives some thoughts, then my stepdown arrives
Page 7 - PS3 setup, Online Store and browser impressions, initial Gundam impressions
Page 8 - Scribble confirms multivoltage, Trip confirms some peripheral support and the fact you can access Online Stores from other regions
Page 9 - More XMB impressions, MotorStorm demo impressions, EA games confirmed region free
Page 10 - DVD playback test, Demo impressions of F1, Cash Guns Chaos and Blast Factor
Page 11 - I then try some media playback...
Page 12 - ... but need to go about it differently! More Blast Factor, RR7 demo impressions and first thoughts on backwards compatibility, Trip does MotorStorm tilt control
Page 13 - NBA 07 and Resistance demo impressions, comment on reliability, Trip's initial view of online
Page 14 - Linux link and discussion, how well does the R2 button work for PES

I'm back! But probably only because I won't have time to even download the firmware update before I head into work, so I'm leaving it turned off until tonight. :)

Second impressions: there are no pictures of games on the back of the box. Yes, I know that's what you all were interested in. It has attracted dust inside the protective white wrapping in the box, so that doesn't bode well.

Bah, just blast dust at it and have it done with. Can't let it turn you into a clean freak :)

Pfft, how lame, what are you, a casual gamer? ;)

Anyway, nice. Have fun with it, and keep us updated (as if you wouldn't). :)

    Major lol@ Dexter!

Last one before I go to work (There's only two of us in the shop today, so it would be far too shitty to leave the poor woman on her own): The controller is very light, but not worryingly so. Should be okay for regular control and motion sensitive, at first glance. The sticks feel slighty smaller with a touch more resistance, but this could be me dreaming. The triggers are a bit odd when you first push them, as they pivot quite sharply. Not sure how worried I would be about my finger slipping off though; a lot of reports have said it's a potential problem, but the trigger isn't smooth it has the same rough finish as the top of the sticks so again I can't see it being a problem. Might change when you're in the middle of something a bit more frantic than just very gingerly holding it for the first time.

It felt like I was unfurling a religious manuscript as I opened the thing, absolutely electric. It's a really good looking machine in the flesh (so to speak), see you all tonight!

Weren't the original Japanese PS controllers something like 13% smaller than the EU released ones?

    My mate had one iirc

Iím quite jealous, but not really of having a PS3 (Iím not too arsed really), but more just the experience of opening and owning something new, rare and precious like that. It really is magical. When I got my JPN Megadrive (aged 10) I actually kept putting it all back in the box and taking it all out again, it was just so cool! :)

Now ilmaestro I admire you. You are a serious gamer. A guy that must really love his videogames.

You're gonna take a bit of stick for paying that much wedge on a system but good on you mate.

Now that were friends - where do you live.

This thread is as good as any for the return of 'Qualified'.

I bet he's got two - one for each of his 100" tellies.

    :o)

Glad you're happy with it so far but gotta disagree with it being pretty. I saw one in the "flesh" a couple of days ago and think it's ugly!

Keep us updated on other stuff though :)

Can you pop some PS1 and PS2 games in there later on after you have Ridge Racer'ed yourself to death ilmaestro?

I'm already expecting PS2 games to look identical to the rendering on a real PS2, PS1 games seem to be an unknown quantity though. If they are running via emulation this time rather than hardware I would expect some difference. Try Vib Ribbon if you have it please, I'm interested to see if the PS3 will cope with games that require you to swap the game disk for other CDs.

And I'm sort of excited too, even though its somebody else who has got the PS3. :-)

My understanding is that it's as quiet as a slimline PS2. Which is damned quiet.

What's wrong with you man!? You get a PS3 and have time to create a thread?!

Last one before I go to work
I can't believe you're going to work. You just better hope the FedEx doesn't break into your house and steal it!

    Please tell us more tonight!
