Do you seriously have experience of 10 mmorpgs? Surely there's not enough time in the day to deal with that many time-suckers.

I'd put Guild Wars in the list, the pvp system there is class.

I'm still playing WoW, but thankfully not completely addicted to it like I used to be. It has ruined single player rpgs for me though.

I got out a few months before Oblivion was released. Not quite soon enough, it would appear.

I'm guessing City of Heroes/Villains. A few of the PC magazines rave about it. I just couldn't get into it myself though. I found WoW easier to get into. I gave up on that after six or so months too though.

I've basically given up on MMORPG's. It just takes too long to keep up with the hardcore players as a casual player. I'll stick to Oblivion ta very much. :)

In terms of recent box sales it has to be World of Warcraft, City of Heroes/ Villains & Star Wars Galaxies. All these sold really well at launch. Oh and Guild Wars too but that's a bit different. SWG has probably crashed in popularity because they completely changed the game but the others should be doing ok. Hardcore games like Lineage won't do well as most players are casual.

Old favourites like Everquest, Ultima, DAOC and Asheron's Call will keep going because of their hardcore player base who all know each other now.

The next biggy will be Lord of the Rings Online which I think will easily outsell all the other MMORPGs to be released within the next two-three years.

Lineage and Lineage 2 combined have around 20% of the market, which is the largest share after WoW. Everyone else is fighting for the scraps.

That's globally though isn't it? Lineage is nowhere near as popular in Europe as it is in Asia.

It's the media darling of virtual worlds but it's not really a game. It's a digital sandbox and tough work to get into.

It's just a furry sex simulator. Where all the deviants go when they realise WoW doesn't include humping animations and oversized genitalia for making their female elf character have sex with a wolf.
The sandbox aspect is interesting but the building tools are frustrating to use, lots of fiddling about making tiny adjustments to get things to fit properly. If you can learn the scripting language there's a lot of scope for some fun stuff.

Lags like a bastard though and they keep making changes and additions that make it perform even worse or gimp the world. Used to be you had these barriers you could set around your land to keep out people you didn't want, but they only went up to a certain height so if you were flying around you didn't constantly bump into them. Now they go right up in the sky and you can't move anywhere without hitting an invisible wall.

It's the media darling of virtual worlds but it's not really a game.

I do wonder if any of the people giving it all this press have ever actually used it. 99% of SL users aren't running businesses and building amazing digital artwork, they're wearing Star Trek uniforms, living in make-believe suburbia or decorating poorly-built castles with pornography.
