I'm telling you, it's a reskinned LA Noire. Reskinned to get around the exclusivity agreement in place with Sony.

Well its looking more like LA Noire is never going to see the light of day, so if they've somehow meshed it with Max Payne 3 - I don't see the problem. LA Noire was looking pretty good. In any case, nobody has played it to review it and say its crap.

First Max Payne 3 pictures from Game Informer.
What the fuck????? This looks nothing like a Max Payne game. And it will have multiplayer...

I thought that when I read about it, it's the best Max Payne game that isn't actually a Max Payne game.

That looks awful, it reminds me of 50 Cent: Blood in the Sand and whilst I hear that's a decent game that's not what Max Payne should be. The character design is all wrong, Payne changed in appearance from 1 to 2 and that was jarring enough but this is on another level.

It's so depressing, bland and generic in appearance I don't know why they thought this would be the best way to bring Payne back.

As I lyrically put it in the comments: FFS.

It might be alright. Need to see something other than scans really. But yeah, shame to have ditched the 'noir' thing, as that was basically the USP now that bullet time is the most overused thing ever.
  • Deleted user 10 June 2009 18:33:20
It looks like they had some other game, ditched it, then re-used the assets and stuck 'Max Payne' on it. Terrible.

I don't personally see why it's such a bad idea to do something radically different. Sure, cranking out Max Payne 3 Which Is Actually Max Payne 2 With Better Visuals (Which Itself Was Max Payne 1 With Better Visuals) (to give it the full title) would have been okay, I think taking it wildly out of its comfort zone could lead to interesting things.

Yeah, I remember when everyone saw the first Double Agent screenshots and decided it wasn't a proper Splinter Cell game, but it turned out to be genius.

Does a Monkey Island in New York seem like a good idea to you?

I've still got that sitting on my PC waiting for a replay. Bought it off steam for a fiver.

That's a different question entirely. There's no logical reason why Max Payne set in a different country couldn't work, both from a story and a gaming perspective. Until we've seen more than some blurry scans of mocked-up shots, I wouldn't write it off as a disaster.

I don't mind them changing the series (though I think it'd be a shame to lose the noir feel, it's such a rare thing in gaming) but the admittedly limited screenshots they've released so far are so bland they could come from any of 10 third person shooters released or soon to be released over the past few years.

So is Double Agent actually good then? Like mo I bought it on impulse off Steam (and if you work out why that sentence is amusing I'll give you a cookie), but haven't even installed it yet.

I think itís a fantastic game myself, but you do of course have to be one of those people that likes stealth games.

Very good stuff though, stays fresh all the way through. Really solid game and doesnít get enough credit.

I bloody hate stealth games (with the notable exceptions of Thief and Hitman) :D

which does make me wonder why I bought it, but oh well.

DA was a good game. The multiplayer was not up to scratch for me though >:(
  • Deleted user 10 June 2009 19:21:49
Anyway, sorry for the brief derail there.

Back to Max Payne - switching the visual style doesn't necessarily mean that all Noir elements have gone. It's perfectly plausible for Noir to be in brightly lit sunny environments (Miami Vice is Neo-Noir, for example). Admittedly, the stark contrasts between light and dark, silhouetting and whatnot counts a lot, but with competent storytellers (which, by and large, Rockstar are) there's no reason why it couldn't work.

Well, it's much more Theif/Hitman than it is MGS.
