    Right,

I'm looking to upgrade. Going to start down the seperates route after years of home theatre kits (though my current amp is ok - denon avr-770sd).

I want to spend roughly a grand.

I want a good amp and a floor standing speaker. Possibly a pair of floor standing speakers.
Multiple optical inputs are a must.
Any new fangled digital distribution/connection stuff woud be a bonus (i.e. hdmi, wireless/network shenanigans).

Now the amp i have is fairly decent, so i might end up just going for some speakers.

    Any ideas?
    Recommendations?

    cheers chaps!

2 to start with - my existing denon speakers + sub are good enough as surround satellites.

Been reading some good things about the kef q5's. Good idea about demoing on my amp, might give that a whirl.

    cheers

if i'm goign to upgrade the amp, it's going to have to be able to do at least 6 channels.

Not buying a full set of speakers at this time...

    now that's what i'm looking for! :)

Pity it doesn't have hdmi slots - this amp is going to want to be the centre of my AV setup for the next 5 years so if i'm going to spend a grand it had better have hdmi! :)

Ok, looks like i'll be getting a pair of floorstanders first. My existing amp outputs 100w per channel so it'll be enough 'for now' until i can scrape together another grand for a future proof amp. Hopefully by that time the HDMI models will have come down in price, or it may be worth hitting TCR in the january sales :)

    OK - serious answers. :)

I run a set of Kef 2005.1 satellites with my Denon 2802 amp. It seems to partner really well with my MJ Acoustics 100 subwoofer. I can recommend that setup very highly.

However, a word of warning. If you are thinking about buying a semi serious AV Amp, I'd hold off for a few months until units supporting the HDMI 1.3 spec come along. The next generation of audio with movies will carry picture and sound together on the same HDMI cable. This is also required because the next generation of lossless audio (DTS-HD and DD True HD) have a very high bandwidth requirement.

My advice, wait a little and make sure whatever you get supports the HDMI 1.3 spec.

Is optical out not good enough any more then?

Optical is not good enough for SACD, but that's probably just a weird thing with SACD.

Definately going to wait for the HDMI stuff to come in.

    Cheers for the recommendations

    It's not a werid thing - it's a frequency / bandwidth limitation thing.

Let us know what you go for - I'll be snuffling for upgrades early next year to make sure I can make the most of HD-DVD / BluRay goodness.

absolutely, but it illustates the point that optical isn't good enough for everything :)
