Great Gatsby should be public domain by now though, shouldn't it? F Scott Fitzgerald died in the 40s.

Ah, a quick google says "yes, partially". So it's available on Australia's Project Gutenberg, but not the US one.

Vague ebook news - apparently Hunger Games trilogy is now the biggest selling series (print and ebook combined), surpassing the combined sales of all 7 Harry Potter books. Almost solely down to ebook sales (all three books have consistently been in the top 10 of the ebook charts since launch - 822 days according to Amazon). Which kind of makes me wonder who's still buying them at such a rate? Would have thought most people on the planet* have read them by now.

    * obvious exaggeration

Novels these days are like what movie blockbusters used to be like. Every new one that comes along seems to be the most successful ever, despite not actually being that remarkable.
  • Deleted user 17 August 2012 17:24:47
True, though this is a particular exception to that rule. Big "THE BEST NEW NOVEL EVER" stuff tends to fade away within a week or two, this has remained strong for nearly three years. It's not anything about the novel itself though, more a comment on how ebooks have grown. 3 books in print and digital outselling 7 books in print in half the time is a pretty interesting statistic.

Suppose the film helped shift more copies. Surprised its done so well for so long though, agrees. Thought they were pretty poor books tbh.

I thought they were okay. Noticeable dip in the middle book and a somewhat lame ending to the third, but a shite-sight better than any of the Twilight books.

There's some sort of big announcement happening in the next few hours, apparently. Rumour is it'll be a backlit e-ink and a Kindle Fire 2 that matches the specs of that Google tablet (and possibly with 4G), so nothing that exciting.
  • Deleted user 6 September 2012 18:54:23
In fact, yeah, they've just announced it now. Kindle Paperwhite. Proper white back, 66% increase in resolution, better contrast and backlit. Two months of battery life with Wifi switched on.

    It's frontlit.

And I'll be first in line for one of those. Won't have to read on my phone or tablet at night now.

I think I may be buying my first e-reader, it looks great.

Kindle Serials announced. Basically just pre-ordering an entire series in one go. Sounds like a terrible idea to me.

Now they're doing random stats on Kindle Fire - apparently it has a 22% marketshare in the US. Kind of impressive.

And yes, now newly upgraded Kindle Fire - $159, faster processor, more RAM.

Kindle Fire HD also announced. Looks like it's in 7 and 8.9' models. 1920x1200 res. Other specs incoming, including price - it may be $199.

ED: They're claiming the GPU in it is faster than Tegra 3, which is interesting, especially if the price points are accurate.

Sold on the paper white. Good job I stopped myself buying the touch a few months back. Having said that I suspect it won't be before Xmas when it is released in the uk.
  • Deleted user 6 September 2012 19:42:57
Yeah, no European dates have been announced. Paperwhite launching in the US on October 1st. But considering it's heavily tied in with Amazon's cloud, and Amazon's history with UK launch dates, I'd be surprised if an EU release even gets mentioned.
  • Deleted user 6 September 2012 19:55:13
    Kindle Fire HD 7" - $199

    Kindle Fire HD 8.9" - $299

Both feature HDMI out. The 8.9" has 32GB storage and 4G. Pretty good pricing, really.

EDIT: And they're doing 1 year of unlimited 4G data for $50. That's unbelievably cheap.

Actually, the 4G is limited to 250 MB a month.

These HD fires look great though, if you can stomach the limitations of the OS and App store.
  • Deleted user 6 September 2012 21:08:24
    That is less impressive. Blah.

And the 4G one is $499. I am now unimpressed. But I'll probably upgrade my Kindle to the paperwhite soon - my only real criticism of the current Kindle is the greyness to the screen in general.

Wow. Genuinely surprised they're launching. Interesting that they're still not bothering with the Amazon movies, just giving a free Lovefilm trial. Does confirm the MP3 cloud is coming to the UK, though.

Hmm. Could be timely. 2G Kindle seems to given up the ghost. Just freezes even after a hard reset.

Bah, pity we'll have to wait an age for the Paperwhite, the only one I'm interested in. I'll retire my trusty Sony 650 when I get hold of one of those. Pearl e-ink has been around for so long, this seems like the first ereader in ages that feels like a serious upgrade. I take it it's a bad idea importing due to accounts etc?
  • Deleted user 6 September 2012 22:05:53
You can root the old Fires, but chances are these are upgraded, so it might be a while before a foolproof root method comes out.

Free unlimited cloud storage (for your Amazon content, heh) with the Fire HD.

    That's piqued my interest.

Paperwhite is a stupid name for e-ink. The only books I own with white paper are art books with glossy pages, posh cookery books and my colour comics. And given e-ink doesn't yet do colour, to have white paper with monochrome text seems a little odd. Not saying it's wrong, but to claim it's like paper is stupid. It's better than paper.

Cubby didn't know how to turn off sigs!

That literally just means "digital stuff bought on Amazon". Which means, for the UK, books and Amazon-bought MP3s. The Fire was entirely built around being a cloud device (which is why they argued it didn't need more than 8GB storage), so restricting that would have been a bit pointless.

It's a bit of a misnomer for Amazon to suggest that's a feature of the Fire anyway, as you get that by default with an Amazon account.

And apps as well, I'm building a nice collection of freebies via their free app of the day feature on their Android Appstore.

Oh yeah, forgot they launched the appstore there. But yeah, it's pretty much just "access to the stuff you bought".

So you think this is separate from their existing Clouddrive, where you can upload anything you want?

I mean, clearly it must be separate but it is slightly ambiguous.
