Wow this is the fourth highest rated game ever in Metacritic's PC list. That is seriously impressive.

I love it when you get a stunner like this without much hype or fanfare.

There was lots of both, if you ask me, console-centric EG forum notwithstanding. :)

Reallly? The first I heard of it was very recently, and I love my PC games.

It first appeared maybe 1 1/2 years ago, and being made by Relic and looking how it does, got quite a bit of hype and coverage. including numerous "game of the show" awards at E3 2005.

My oh my, but it is very sweet. A real 4 in the morning addiction and as well thought out and executed a game as i have seen in ages....but....not perfect.

The AI, whilst good is not a vast improvement on what has gone before, the enemy troops are still too willing to commit piecemeal and stand in a rain of mortar shells. The process of getting units out of buildings is badly implemented as the review points out, and having units not able to disband from siezed weapons is a fault

Forgive the downer but this fucker kept me awake till way tooo late last night, and the night before..and the one before that.

It is the best of the genre and by a long way, in fact it may be the gold standard for an RTS. Just need to know who to invoice for all the lost sleep.

My play order has switched to "packing", so looks like it's going out on time for release day. I'll have the weekend to have a crack at Fritz. Hopefully, I'll also get a chance to play the game. (boom boom)

Only been playing a few hours, but one thing keeps niggling at me :p

The water looks like its from a game from the 90's, anyone know a graphic setting to fix it?

Rest of the game is pretty playing at 1680*1050, but the water is abysmal and keeps annoying me.

Hm. Water looks pretty gorgeous on my system. You either have to set the "shader" settings to "high", or maybe you have an older graphics card?

Maybe I should just buy it. That Game special edition looks tempting, especially with Dawn of War included.

Play are doing it with Dawn of War. Pretty sure the Game website has it down as being bundled with Warhammer 40K.

    Which one's the better freebie?

If you haven't got Dawn of War already, then you're in for a hell of a weekend! Not only do you get the 10/10 CoH, but Dawn of War is quite simply an awesome game! I'm a bit biased in that I like the background to it, but it really is good.

Ok, so i've only just heard about it and read the review... Sounds great, but i don't understand one thing...

The screen shots all look like a first person viewpoint (a la fps) but it's a RTS game... How does that work then?

The screenis are a bit unfortunate. While you have a free camera if you press ALT, the game looks like this usually.

Fortunately, the default camera works a treat, and no fighting with camera controls is ever necessary.

Ah, see now that makes more sense. I was trying to figure out how you could possibly control an RTS with that kind of viewpoint!

    Cheers Uncky!

    I'm using an athlon 64 3000+ with mine :p

And using it at the very very high resolution of 1680*1050.

Well, either you have a driver problem then or something, or you are just very picky when it comes to water effects. ;)

Here's how it should look like with your card and the correct settings

Gamespot had better, self-made shots, but you can't link to them. :/

It looks similar to that however:
    1) Objects pass through it with no waves/ripples/any kind of visible disturbance(as if no clipping on a solid object)
2)Textures applied to the water(waves in opening level) look pasted on

It reflects beautifully, but looks completely artificial and un-lifelike.

Finished the Campaign game today, it was great but a bit short, and much easier than the skirmishes (which I still can't win on normal). We'll have to get some multiplayer games going once my proper copy gets here.

Also UL, you were interested in GTR2 werent you? Did you pick it up?

Well up for some multiplayer any time! I usually beat the AI on normal, but don't have a chance on hard. Lots of people on the Relic forum complaining how the AI sucks and skrimish isn't a challenge. Hm. :p

GTR isn't out yet, it'll probably in the shops tomorrow (official release on Friday). Not sure yet if I should get it now though, there's so much coming out in October. :)

After downloading and playing the demo I must say that I'm very impressed.

I'm buying first thing tomorrow, that's my weekend gone.

So, anyone know what sort of experience I'm likely to have on an XP2400, 9700Pro and 1.25gb RAM?

If I can get it playable at 1024x768 with most eyecandy turned on then I'll give it a go, but a 1.8gb demo just to watch it struggle in wireframe mode at 800x600 I'll pass on.

I've got an Athlon 64 3000, 1 gig o' RAM and a Radeon 9700, and it runs acceptably in 1024x768 - but with most eyecandy turned OFF. Do not expect to be able to play this with all effects on - it runs, but when the tanks start shooting, and an artillery barrage comes in, it's Jerk-o-vision(TM), and quite impossible to give orders.

Edit: Still a ruddy great game, though! I'm enjoying myself greatly.

Time to upgrade that 9700 to something with a little more oomph.

My copy of this should be here tomorrow, my PC is no great shakes any more but it's got a reasonably decent graphics card so I'm hoping it be ok.

For those who have got it, it does support widescreen resolutions doesn't it?

    This space left intentionally blank.
