Next year's Age of Ultron marvel event sounds cool. Starts with millions dead and Ultron ruling the world (I'm guessing time travel/ alternate timelines ends up being the solution to undo it at the end).

Still though, Bendis has a knack of coming up with cool ideas for events but utterly cocking them up in the execution due to his total inability to understand what pacing is. So I predict 9 issues of talking heads followed by an out-of-nowhere 10 page final battle after a convenient maguffin to resolve it all.

By all means let him come up with the premise of events, but for the love of god stop letting him write the fucking things.

Boys never clicked with me. Just felt like it was trying way too hard all the way through. Its best ideas were stolen from Powers which was much more clever, and what was left was unnecessary crudeness and extremism for the sake of shock - like a 14 year old who wanks off on the teacher's chair in a free period and thinks he's funny. Ennis has done far far better.

Oh, there you. I can write about comics with a bit of passion. You can use that if you like morriss.

The Boys was the only one I've liked before this recent bunch. It's still my favorite.

How can you not like Kick Ass 2?! They swap his head for a dog's ferchristsake!

I'm totally doing that chairwank thing.

    Have you read Preacher?

I've read the first compendium thing but found it a bit dull to be honest. This caused great consternation for some reason.

I think I preferred Boys to Preacher, actually. Although there are moments of frequent puerile offensiveness, it flips between that and periods of poignancy that I thought was quite touching and impressive. Particularly later on. Though my opinion is probably void as I've only ever read about 4 comics ever.

I thought Preacher started well but quickly (well, around volume 4) descended into yet another "hilariously" perverted/deformed bad guy procession like an awful lot of Ennis' work. Liked the character development between Jesse, Tulip and Cassidy though and the Saint of Killers is awesome.

It's certainly worth persevering with beyond that.

It's still very original and has some of the best characters in any run ever. It's highly regarded for good reason, although it does have its dips and missteps.

Boys is hugely derivative and I just felt like I'd seen it all before but with less Ennis, but it was ok.

The boys doesnt reach the same highs as preacher but it is more consistent. Preacher really dipped towards the end whereas the boys was decent all the way through its run.

And I disagree on the powers thing, I dont think its derivative of that really. The core of 'who watches the watchmen' is fairly well established, yes but this comes at it from a totally different angle.

Not so much in terms of that, but more the kind of devient activities heroes get up to that makes up much of the tone and humour of Boys. Powers did it first in a very similar style.
  • Deleted user 29 November 2012 12:19:09
But yes, Boys was also derivative of Watchmen.

    I reviewed 100 Bullets. http://comicspoliticspeople.com/2012/12/01/100-bullets/

    There it is.

Miracleman's next, I think. Or maybe Sandman.

Hey morriss, you were looking for people to write comics reviews before weren't you? Have you asked DM yet? He seems to have great amounts of knowledge, especially on Marvel comics. I'm sure he could trow up a few political things for you too.

    Just an idea.

I will most likely edit it. Unless of course what you write is perfect, which it never is. (as in, nothing anyone writes is)

Also, images are up to you, if you want to link to some with captions, do so. If not, I'll choose some and whack them in.

I can either credit you by your real name, your EG handle, a twitter handle etc.. That too, is up to you.

It'd be good to have some Marvel stuff on the site, DM.
  • Deleted user 1 December 2012 19:16:07
I've been reading comics for about 12 years (mostly Marvel), but I've only ever written sarky blog posts about them. I guess I'll have to think about it.

Do that. It doesn't have to be a review. It can be a criticism. A eulogy. A critique. An article. Anything really.

Not a problem at all, im used to the editing process. Only thing i wuld say is to make it a two way process so the writer can question the editor and vie versa, whilst obviously maintaining that the editor have full control - in other words, give the writer a preview of the edit befire its oublished.

Screenshots is something I want to do but i need to get capture stuff to do it.

What content are you after? Rviews, opinion pieces, retrospectives, features, etc?

Bear in mind I do, as Aargh said, specialise in Marvel. Ask me to review, say, Wonder Woman, and dont be surprised if I find it difficult to not being familiar with the character's history, writers, etc. but stick me in a marvel title, and im in my element. Hell, give me an issue number of uncanny xmen and i can usually tell you who wrote it, drew it and give you a plot synopsis off the top of my head. I also have a huge personal library for reference. I read other stuff, including dc, but marvel is my strength.

Edit - typos are reflective of spazzy ipad, not general writing ability btw

Write whatever you like. I'm not going to commission you.

Don't go mad about the images. Just google image stuff.

And unfortunately there is no two-way process as far as editing is concerned. I'll edit and post it, and I won't ruin it, I'll make it better.

Or, if you think I've ruined it, never write anything for the site again. But I don't have time to to and fro.

I'm sure it'll all work itself out nicely.

I picked up the new Deadpool Max trade the other day and it's the first time in a while a comic has made me laugh out loud. Having never really bothered with Deadpool before it's all a refreshing change of pace. Not entirely sold on the art yet but it does the job.

Plus 16 for an oversized hardback was a happy impulse price for me.

Deadpool max is fucking brilliant! I keep thinking Ennis/Dillon would be perfect on it.

    @morriss

I'll do an opinion piece and submit it and see where we go from there I guess.

Dont expect me to not be controversial ;)
