Alliance is good .. but microsoft no longer support it and it now has player run servers. (but no subscription fee anymore)

Is about 5 years old now but was excellent for its time but as has been said steep learning curve.

All existing players are pros now.

Eve online is a good space simulator (online obviously)

Descent freespace is a good (offline) action space simulator

Homeworld is a good (offline) strategy space simulator

I can't quite believe that no one has come out with a spaceship-based online combat game. Not a MMORPG. But a space combat title. A bit of x-wing, a bit of colony wars, a bit of FPS-style tactical blasting.

Something exciting and involving would sell by the bucketload surely?

There was X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter and X-Wing Alliance but they use the MSN Gaming Zone and so are a bit limited.

A new TIE Fighter with built-in voice comms would be excellent.

That wiki is missing Allegiance it was by microsoft.

    Evochron Alliance is totally different

Allegiance used to be a pay for play game on private MS servers but they stopped supporting it and released server source code.

It is an excellent game but hard to get into due to it being online only (though did have an offline tutorial) and only hardcore veterans still playing it that aren't noob friendly.

Gameplay wise it was the equivalent of Battlefield 2 but in space. Two teams..Taking and holding points. Multiple people on ships one as driver one or more as gunners.. Commander overview etc...

--Yeah the original post wrongly named it as alliance ---

That sounds awesome. I love noob haters. Once you're in, you're in.
So it is Allegiance instead of Alliance. Good deal.

Eve doesn't actually have any combat. nor can you actually pilot your ship. It's certainly not a combat sim.

Indepandant Wars 2: Edge of Chaos had multiplayer now I come to think of it, that was a great game!

    Eve does have combat

I's not 'direct control combat' though. ie: you don't need to use a joystick to control up. down, dodge things etc..

Instead you choose where you want to go and what you want to shoot with the mouse and it does it.

It's not 'arcade' combat but still you shoot things. So it does count as combat in my book.

Infact i called bore you with tales of hordes or pirates and players i have killed back in the day with the old EG clan ..
and these were all very strategic combat engagements.. chasing people.. running away.. outmanouvering .. using shields and tractor weapons etc... so don't say it has no combat .. PvP and PvC combat is it's main thing.

Infact there used to be the biggest thread ever in the Eurogamer forums about Eve online only second in size to Ottos legendary animal crossing thread.

BUt Errol the creator of the thread deleted it ..

It was more an act of spite on his part but i suppose i forgive him ..
there was so much history in that thread .. all gone.. o well

It was due to some double crossings and backstabbings within the EG online clan with .. ingame money going missing and accusations of theft and corruption.. all quite amuzing really.

OK, now I'm interested again :-)

Is there an EG-favoured Corp or anything. I played the trial again last night but god there's so much to remember, it turned me cold. I'll have to run the tutorial twice

The old EG corp no longer exists ..

can't remeber the guys to speak to though was a looong time ago

    the USS Enterprise NX-01, A, B, D or E or
what else you can think off, you should be able to find your ship.
    * totally new equipment possibilities (powerplants, scanners, tractor beams,
upgrades for shields and reactors, armor, radiation shields, ....)
    to outfit your ship with
    * a lot of new systems to explore

I remember trying that X2 game. It had the most ridiculously convoluted and off-putting interface I have ever come across.

+1 to that. I love my space shooters, but when Eve Online is the more intuitive option, you've fucked up somewhere. Awful game IMO.

I do like Freelancer, and there are still some good servers out there. Air Rivals is a free MMO that has space sections later on, but it's not the best game ever.

Jumpgate (classic) is back online and free to play.

Dated graphics, so playable on old hardware. It's been resurrected by the community, and getting some decent player counts.
