    Hi people.

I have just got a new PC with a good graphics card and I am currently purchasing games to build up a good collection.

What I need now is a good online space combat sim.

    Any ideas?

    Homeworld
    Homeworld
    Homeworld

    And maybe Eve Online.

    Then some more Homeworld

There's a Homeworld 2 but it's not as good as Homeworld.

Which is great by the way

    Do you suggest Homeworld?

Do people still play it online?

He said space combat which, unless I miss my guess, means something in the mould of X Wing or Freespace 2.

But yeah, if you want something more RTS-like, S.J.Rogers, then Homeworld is superb.

Not aware of anything decent as far as online space combat though, other than Jumpgate and I've no idea how popular that still is.

    Is Homeworld online? o_O

I remember playing the demo years ago and thinking it was pretty good... Maybe I'll look for a copy.

Online space combat i don't know about, nobody seems to make games like that anymore, got taken over by commodity management sims. Wot about Descent3 ;)

There's only Freelancer left, and practically no one lays it online anymore. It's great though, it's more like an MMO.

Eve Space Combat isn't exactly twitch gaming, but it's quite compelling.

Thing is, to get to the combat bit, Eve is a hell of a committement of time. Think Elite times 500. Bear in mind that the tutorial - which includes some combat - takes about 6 hours to play through.

Try the (currently free for 14 days) demo and find out.

Well worth it - if you have the time..........

Ah i was never sure of Eve, always had the nagging feeling that if i did get it up and running i would've dumped it faster than Freelancer and X2.

What i want, what i really really want, is a Homeworld First Person Space Combat shmup. I felt the engine and art direction was wasted on a stinky rts. Anybody said Freespace 2 yet?

    Freespace 2

    Tiefighter "next-gen" FTW.

This as a great game. I dunno where this genre went, but I want it back!

Eve doesn't actually have any combat. nor can you actually pilot your ship. It's certainly not a combat sim.

Indepandant Wars 2: Edge of Chaos had multiplayer now I come to think of it, that was a great game!

MMORPG.com have a good list of online games. Although as the title suggests they're more RPGs than sims.

    Good link, that MMO one.

Vendetta Online looks pretty good, as does Jumpgate. Starport looks a bit like a Space Ranger type thing. No bad thing really, I loved that game, and as an aside, Endless Ages looks ace. Battlecruiser Online looks like it's worth looking out for too.

    Phew, complicated post.

I'm guessing that everyone saying Homeworld never played Nexus: The Jupiter Incident. It's by far a superior game and the graphics are stunning. It has multiplayer though I don't know what the community is like.

Anyway, neither of those are space combat sims.

Your best bet is Freespace 2, though the multiplayer is currently down.

Other than that, ever heard of Alliance? It's a full on sim with newtonian physics, player controlled capital ships and a commander. I've never played it but I'm told it's got a very steep learning curve, but ultimately is very rewarding.

To top it off, it's free. Get thee to Google.

I don't know why I'm busy typing this and not playing it already!

I tried to get into that about a year ago when it went free, but it is very difficult to pick up and I found the community a bit stand offish to noobs to say the least, so I gave up after a week of trying. Hopefully that was just the server I got stuck playing on but I'e never felt the need to try it again.

Surely somebody out there would realise the commerical possibility behind a full MMO version of Elite?

I used to play Earth & Beyond which I really enjoyed until it got cancelled. It was a bit like a MMO version of Elite. Shame it went the way it did.

Doesn't Star Wars Galaxies have space combat in one of the expansions? I've never played it so can't say for sure.

Yeah it does. I stopped playing Galaxies before the expansion so can't say how good it is.

Just thought of Star Wars Battlefront 2 which has some fantastic space fighty bits in it. Well worth a look at.
