Would you really buy a console just because of one game?

I would buy a PS3 if FFVII Remake was released for it :-)

Of course there'd be other stuff I'd play. But nothing will make me buy one in the next... 3-4 years, except that.

"Would you really buy a console just because of one game?"

Depends which game and the price of the console.

Ikaruga or Super Smash Bros. are a yes.
    Earthbound is yes.

    PS3's price is no.

All this talk of Grand Theft Auto IV has me thinking about so-called 'sytem selling' games.

I'm always intrigued when I hear somebody say, "I already had console x, but I bought console y because it had game z". Now, fairplay if they have a lot of money or time to spend playing through the catalogues of two or more consoles, but I have very little of both, which makes me a one console man.

Basically, going into each new generation, I wait to see how things pan out, and then pick the console that I feel will likely have the broadest coverage of the types of games that I enjoy most. Sure, I might miss out on quite a few AAA games on the machines that I went without, but that's life.

Oppurtunity cost. What I'd like to know is, for the people that like to get two or three consoles in each generation, what's your handle? How many games do you own overall? Is it a case of buying a couple for each, a lot for one and few for the others, or are you a rich/crazy bastard that simply buys every conceivable game that you want across all two or three platforms?
    Fixed.

You clearly need medical help if you buy a console for SSB. Why not just pick up any console controller and just mash the buttons at random. You don't even need the TV on.
Oh dear god, what have you done!?!

Maybe you should complain on internet forums if you don't get the games you want on your console.

Try playing with actual humans and not the computer and tell us you can get through it by just button bashing.

    Either way...

    SSB = Fun.

    The End.

On topic: I would for any main Final Fantasy.

    I did for Oblivion.

    And for Halo.

    And Frequency.

    So, I might do.

Noboby does it. When they say they bought a console becuase of a particular game it just means that it was the final deciding factor but once you have the console you'll buy more games for it, play and enjoy those aswell.
It's never just the one game.

    o/

I still only have Oblivion for 360 - and I bought it about 3 months ago.

Halo was the only game I had on Xbox for about 4 months too.

    Let me think...

    Shenmue sold me a Dreamcast.
GTA III sold me a PS2.
    GTA:LCS sold me a PSP.
    GRAW sold me a 360.

So that's a yes. Obviously I wouldn't buy a console and only ever buy that one title for it, that'd be bizarre.

    This space left intentionally blank.

Freek is spot on. I don't think anybody buys a console "just for Oblivion/ GTA/ Zelda/ whatever", cos logically that'd mean they won't own another game for that console during its lifespan. If someone's already considering a console, then one game can cause them to make that leap though: which is what I think people mean by "system-selling" games.

Launch periode, not enough good games out.

Depends on the price. If the Wii is 150 and there's one game I really want, then yeah. But if it's 425 (you know who you are), then no. No matter how good the game was.

Yes... But I knew this and still bought the console purely for one game.

I will almost certainly buy more games in the future, but I would not have the console now if it wasn't for Oblivion. For some people, one game is what makes the sale, and I am one of those people.

If what you're saying is that noone buys a console for literally one game ever, then I'd be more likely to agree. Except I know a guy who bought a PC Engine for one game, and one game alone...

I'd buy a DS even if there weren't any games out for it. I just want to look at it. And perhaps lick it, tenderly.

But on the whole, now that I know the value of money, I'd never buy a console for one game.

    I bought a Jaguar for Tempest 2000 (60 all-in)

I bought a JAMMA cab for two boards, if that counts...

But that is what I said, a single game might be a deciding factor but you inevatibly buy more.

Cube might be an acception since it died and there were barely any titles out for it like MGS. So if you were into that, you'd be out of luck.
But those are the strange circumstances that are outside the norm.

Actually, come to think of it, I've had my PSP for something approaching a year, and I only bought Wipeout Pure for it.

I only have Castlevania and Advance Wars for my GBA.

Only have Sonic Adventure and Jet Set Radio for my Dreamcast.

Only have Road Avenger for my Mega CD!

Which goes against what logic dictates, really.

when it (AVP) came out, it wasn't a failed console.

you could have seen that game and thought

    "WOW!! the jaguar looks ace"

then you would have been most dissapointed wouldn't you?

    valid point no?
