Been playing for 14 hours now and Tales of Symphonia is officially awesome. Clichéd with a capital "C" perhaps, but enthused with bucketloads of charm to compensate. Great characters, gorgeous visuals, snappy dialogue (loved it when Lloyd piped up with the self-mocking "stop saying corny things!" line) and interesting dungeons that don't drag on for too long.

Fighting has actually become a lot of fun, with battles over in a flash of stylish sword-swinging. Though I still miss the level of control over the entire party that turn-based combat allows.

In short - get this game if you have any interest whatsoever in Japanese RPGs. It's not going to save the Cube but will make it worth owning again (has for me, anyhow) \o/

I thought I'd engage in a bit of 55 day bumpage since the review's gone up on the front page.

So, is the fighting as bad as it sounds? The real-time combat in .hack totally stopped me playing about 45 minutes in and this doesn't sound too different.

Oh, and anyone want to buy a copy of .hack? ; )

.hack has pretty much the worst fighting system I've ever seen in an RPG (along with a Biohazardesque puny inventory, samey dungeons, slow-moving story... but I guess I should put that into the appropriate thread) so I can see why you're wary about real-time combat. I haven't played Tales of Symphonia yet (I'm so going to buy it though) but I've put about 75 hours into Star Ocean III and love the combat system to bits. And here's what Rob has to say about that:

"The system compares very well to Star Ocean 3's real-time battle system; Symphonia's characters have significantly more intelligent AI and can be fine-tuned in their behaviour by the player if the default settings don't work for you (they're generally fine, though)."

So I'm pretty sure that ToS's fighting system is excellent.

The battle system is thoroughly excellent. I was unsure at first (see my posts earlier in the thread), but once you get accustomed to it you'll fall madly in love. Basically the battles take place on a 2D plane, with your characters starting on the left and the enemy on the right. There are various degrees of control you can choose to have over your character; for example you can have complete control over movement and offense or just press the attack button and the chraracter will run to the currently selected enemy automatically. Spells/special attacks are mapped to the C-stick and the AI is bloody tremendous, rarely needing your assistance.

Bear in mind that this comes from somebody who despises the battle systems of .hack and Kingdom Hearts.

Tales of Symphonia is awesome and the best JRPG to be released in Europe this generation IMO. Don't think about it, just buy!

It's worth the wait. Prepare to lose your weekend (and possibly the next two or three).

I bloody well hope so! I'm taking three days off next week just to have enough time for this and possibly Half-Life 2. It'd better be good... or else!

HAHAHAHAAA! You will never find me, for I am more elusive than a decent (or, indeed, any) JRPG on Xbox!

As always though, give the game a few hours to really get going, unlike me who was having trouble with the battle system initially and had to complain about it ;-)

And tengu: For shame. This is what happens when you go to the dark side, d00d!

Nest game? As in "Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg"? But that was last year iirc.

Actually, I've got all the "Ah! My Goddess" mangas and in my opinion Sheena is one of Kosuke Fujishima's more forgettable character designs. Mmmmh, Peorth... ;p

This is testament to how much I love Symphonia. Wasted more money than is sane on those things.
