    "real time weapon change"

That one is truly, truly, truly unbelievable. Who the hell came up with that line?

I wish Doom had had it.

Completely unfair montage, but quite amusing. I chuckled every time they used the Gran Turismo scene.

I know it sounded awful, but real time weapon change is actually a big deal in Action games. It was a brilliant addition to Devil May Cry 3. Ninja Gaiden Black didn't have it and didn't need it, but it might be great in Ninja Gaiden 2 to swap between weapons mid-combo.

In Ninja Gaiden Black you have to pause the game and go into the menu screen to change weapons. In Devil May Cry 3 you can switch between two equipped melee weapons and two equipped guns by pressing one of the shoulder buttons.

It fundamentally alters how the game is played.

It's not exactly a new feature though, is it? Hardly something to be excited about. All FPS' have had it since Doom.

It's also a bog standard design feature that's been found in games from doom onwards.

If it's so bog-standard then why isn't it in Ninja Gaiden Black or Genji or many other recent action games? By going on about Doom you're comparing apples with oranges and making yourselves look rather foolish.

I agree that it was dumb to be touting it as a feature in the E3 press conference which is supposed to contain much bigger and more exciting news. And I never claimed it was brand new. I'm just pointing out that real time weapon change can be important for Action games, and many recent Action games do not allow for it.

It's pretty obvious that you guys haven't played Genji, NGB and Devil May Cry 3 and therefore don't understand the significance of real time weapon change in Action games.

Not exactly a feature that is only possible on the PS3 though is it?

In context, I doubt the "real-time weapon change" comment is really as cringe-worthy as it seems.

    But that video is hilarious.

This is a ridiculous thread. Any developer can add real-time weapons change to a game if they so wish. It's been that way since the dawn of videogaming. It all depends on whether or not they wish to map the function to one of the facepads or not! Honestly, I'm lolling here. Sony's controller does not affect this ability one way or the other!!!
Like I said, I doubt the full quote went, "The PS3 controller expands our horizons, allowing for new unseen features such as real-time weapon change."

Everything is out of conext, albundy.

I never heard that full quote, and I'm certainly not defending Sonys marketing!

On the video I just saw a guy playing Genji 2 mention real time weapon change, and since the original Genji didn't have that feature, and since the what most people consider the best Action game ever made (Ninja Gaiden Black) also didn't have it, I thought it was good news.

@albundy - you're wrong if you're talking about Action games and not just FPS games. Real time weapon change makes a big difference to gameplay, and you can't just bung it in to a game. But I agree that the Sony controller isn't relevent.

Ah, true. Would of liked real time weapon change in NG though it was a nice breather from the action in the menu. Gets a grip, heads back in to the slaughter. Can't wait for the sequel.

    Japanese history according to Sony

    Superb gif. :D

NGB really needed to use the D-pad for healing items like you can do in Genji. It would have been so much easier to just press Up on the D-pad to drink a health potion. I died a couple of times because I couldn't get the game to register me pressing Start quick enough.

So, just what is this fixation with Ray Maguire about anyway?
It seems to be pushing the right buttons with Koti at least ;)
