Space Engine sounds pretty cool, but possibly ultra dull.

    Speak the truth hussy!

I keep seeing these fantastic game engines and prototypes where you can fly around in space and land on planets but nobody ever, ever seems to make an actual game out of them. It's extremely annoying!

@Billy: Sounds like you might like Universe Sandbox.

I'd also like to play the game that Metaldog and Meme are designing, when's it out? are you doing a kickstarter? :)

Also liked the build a base/ real time strategy type stuff that was set in space.

Was an Amiga game called Millenium 2.2 and it's follow up Deuteros, absolutely loved them both, very atmospheric.

Master of Orion, Star Control 1+2, Space Rangers 1+2, Nexus The Jupiter Incident, Homeworld 1+2, Sins of Solar Empire, Sword of the Stars. Star Trek:Starfleet Command Series

Thanks, I'll take a look at that over the weekend.
I'm glad I looked at the trial version before buying, the controls feel horrible.

Original X-wing (and expansions) wins the day for me. I just wish they expanded on the space battles in Halo Reach :(
When also are we going to see another version of Sid's Alpha Centuri? The reason I mention this is because it would make for an awesome space/planetside RTS sim.

I actually quite liked the old Sierra game Outpost. Wasn't Space Sim, just Sim City in Space, but it had a good feel to it.

Was mostly broken in late-game stage though. And then they went all 'WAR, WAR IS MORE FUN THAN BUILDING' for the sequel.

Outpost, I remember that, that was by the ex NASA guy, yeah it was broken late game, but the tech trees and look was great.

It's iOS only. I'm really not sure about that - I'm well and truly iKittedUp but I'd honestly much rather play this on a proper computer with keys and mouse. Docking in Elite was hard enough without having fingers obscuring your screen (and/or slipping off the controls just when you need them most).

Yeah touch controls and a space trading/combat game seem like a really poor fit. Shame.

    This space left intentionally blank.

Sorry, I have to disagree. I found them awful.

Something like Space Rangers would presumably work on a touch pad?

Space Miner is ok for touch screen controls, I wouldn't even attempt to play something more serious though. Considering controllers barely have enough buttons to cope with a semi-competent flight game it's not surprising that touchscreens completely fall over, have a fit, bite their own tongue and crap themselves.

Touch screens are the very pinnacle of casual gaming, joypads aren't far behind.

Unless it needs a £300 joystick and every key on your keyboard three times over, it's not worth the effort.

Well I was mainly talking about the controls. I only played the first one, and I wasn't expecting too much of it. It was one of the first games I played on the iPhone IIRC. Anyway, I'd like something a lot better if possible.

I don't know. Touchscreen in conjunction with joystick and keyboard could be cool if the game in question had a clickable virtual cockpit.

The world is going mad. Me? I'm doing fine.
