    GODDAMMIT.

Playing an epic game on heroic, I was one day away from a cultural victory when Louis XIV pipped me to it by boosting one of his cities to legendary with a work from a Great Artist.

I always save a game before I go off to war with someone who has comparable tech to me. You never know how hard the bastard AI is going to cheat.

Bah. Saving before you try something out is cheating. True players only save when real world events interrupt ze playflow.

I was actually just thinking about Civ there the other day. My laptop's quite old though and don't think it'd run Civ 4, but I see I could get Civ 3 complete for less than a fiver.

    Worth it?

I've been playing a lot of Aplha Centauri lately. I've got Colonization expansion still in a cellophane wrapper. :/

You think Civ IV is hard? Colonisation (the new one) is fucking steel reinforced granite :(

Colonization is balls. As soon as you start producing liberty bells the REF starts to grow and becomes near unbeatable. Hold off producing bells till you're ready to fight and it's a walkover. Hideously unbalanced and stupidly random.

Bought Civ III off Amazon today for the princely sum of 2.17!

Is it as good as Civ II?

Not really. Civ IV is the pinnacle, especially if you get the Beyond the Sword expansion, (don't bother with Warlords if you do unless you get major wood for scenarios).

I never played Civ II, but from what I've heard from others, Civ III was the best until Civ IV.

It's pretty safe to say that this isn't a very wide-spread opinion.

    4 > 2 > 3 > 1 I'd say. And I only mark 1 down because it's years since I played it and old games are shit, innit?

You know, apropos of absolutely nothing, UncleLou has done more to change my opinion of Germans* than anyone else IN HISTORY.

I don't hate them any more.

    * I'm going to look stupid if UncleLou isn't German.

Why was II better than III?

Better late than never.... I've just got the complete edition on CD!!! YAY! But I can't get the damned patch to work. 319 apparently has loads of issues and the in game updater is crap - I say crap, it's broken - it simply doesn't work. Anyone here have a workaround?

In case anyone fancies Civilization IV, the complete version is on GetGames for 3.75:

    http://www.getgamesgo.com/product/civilization-iv-complete

Civilization III complete is going for 1.25.

They are not Steam activated as far as I know.

Go here for a bajillion free mods. I'd recommend Fall from Heaven II, a complete fantasy rebuild with hero units and spellcasting, and Realism Invictus, which makes everything about 10 times as complex. Totally reinvigorated my Civ love.

    Bumptastic bump Bumpman!

After the best part of 3 years of learning the ropes, casually dipping back for a game now and again, the last few weeks have seen a marked improvement in my Civ play moving from Emperor to Immortal.

My last 2 games on Immortal have resulted in comprehensive Conquest/Domination victories by 1800-ish, with a sneaky space race thrown in for good measure along the way.

Now I'm steeling my loins for Deity....

That is all. You may bask in my exultant aura if you want, mere mortals ;)

funnily enough, after just reading this on Kotaku,I jumped straight back on Civ IV, its just better and more fun than Civ 5 IMO. I actually think the first ones the best but IV runs it close
  • Deleted user 26 June 2013 19:54:44
    That's a great read, cheers :)

Other than Civ Rev and Civ 5 I haven't played any of the earlier ones.

4 is more than good enough for my tastes :D
