Did any of you play this?
I've got it for the second time, rather cheaply I might add and I don't remember it being so slow and sluggish.

    Worth 2.50 though!

After buying it back for a third time, I'm inclined to believe you. Loving ROR at the moment.

Take advantage of the suspend save feature.

On the longer battles it's actually easier to save then use the PS2 soft reset if the battle goes wrong rather than start the battle from scratch. Some of the scenarios take well over an hour.

Brilliant game, very time consuming and slow though.

The slow pace lulls me into playing it for hours. It's been 5-6 years since I've played it and I don't remember it being such a time sink. Brilliant little game.

I still haven't beat this game, some of the battles must stretch out towards an hour and a half later on.

The first game I bought for my PS2, that and Silent Hill 2. Good times!

It's twice as good when you turn off the music and replace it with some epic power metal, by the way. And even better once you figure out the melee unit 'cheat'.

Yeah, sweet mix of PC and console styles, does for SRPGs what Vagrant Story did to JRPGs, flip the script and leaves you wishing it wasn't a one off. Reckon if Konami were to port Ring of Red to the PSP it would have a Disgaea type revival of interest among many gamers who passed on it first time around.

It's great to see similar ideas surfacing today in games like Valkyria Chronicles, albeit in a different style.

Only just noticed this. What's this 'cheat'?

Okay you know there's different range zones, far/medium/close/melee, right? And as soon as you land a punch (for massive damage) the battle is over. Alright, so here is the trick:

    1. As soon as the battle begins, mash forward to move from medium to close range.
    2. When you get in close range, immediately use that leader skill that propels you one range zone forward.
    3. Punch punch punch!

In all the dozens of times I used this strategy the enemy did not have time to do anything at all with his AFW or ground troops, meaning that you get 100% guaranteed damage with your melee units. And since those units are ridiculously powerful, and you get plenty of skill points later in the game, one or two of your close combat AFWs can eliminate the entire enemy platoon.

Was quite proud of myself when I figured that out, and of course I totally abused it from then on. \o/

Started playing this again, still a lot of fun but damn these battles sure take ages, thank goodness for mid battle saves.

Looking back at the earlier posts, think Konami missed a ticket by not porting this to PSP, but its still crying out for another chance, NGP or PSN/XBLA would be ideal.

Looking forward to seeing more (cult) PS2 Classics.

Well, I nearly played it. I remember standing in shops checking out the back and wondering whether to get it. It was so close.

I remember buying this back in the day when Edge gave it a great review. It's really good fun. Title still makes me grin like an idiot though.
