    Help me EG ones!

I'm looking to spend about one and a half grand on a super-portable laptop (ideally no more than 1.5kg) for my mum.

    Your thoughts?

Dont think of this as a highjack.. more of a leech or a cleaner fish...

Can people also recommend a gaming laptop please?

If you have money to burn then these are the babies you want

    Alienware Laptops

You can get thin and light or a gaming beast.

    I got a gaming beast about 5 months ago - plays WoW / Doom3 / HL2 / BF2 / Black 'n' White 2 (all the 2's) perfectly.

    Edit: missed a '/'

Try looking on Dynamism. They specialise in importing tiny laptops (and the like) over from Japan. Their prices are stupidly high, but it's a good place to start looking for suitable models which you can then buy elsewhere.

Don't give your Mum a PC unless you're prepared for zillions of support calls.

I have one of these and it's great. Top notch screen, light as a feather and about 5 hours battery life.

Runs a few games (just about) too, but I guess your mum won't be so interested in that!

First laptop I've ever not begrudged carrying around. Only down point AT ALL is the fact the soft case I bought for it doesn't hold the (tiny) dongle-like battery also, so you have to take it apart. I think the salesman sold me the wrong case, though.

Great battery life, tiny, good keyboard and the screen is superb for watching DVDs on the train home from That London.

yeah me too, for the first time the claim the size of a hard back book is true, and its lighter :)

I think you did get the wrong case :( Ordered my case seperately and I seem to recall there is a FS version and a TX one (because of the battery dongle thingie I presume).

the AV mode is great innit, its all in the details, battery life is very good, not even sure how long it is but must be quite a bit above 5hrs +

    And bump.

Just bought an old Toshiba Portege R200 for 100. I'm still using an even older P3-based R100 but this is new one is a bargain. Pentium M 1.2, 1G & 60Gb. Plus it's just 1.3kg.

My point for posting is that I think it'll run quicker than most of the netbooks and good enough to do some coding on. I reckon there's more value in older tech than the new netbooks/tablets.

I'm really impressed with this little laptop. Shunts stuff around far quicker than a netbook. Okay i might not have the 7 hours battery life. But for a hundred quid it's a bargain.

    :D

    Wow age-old thread bump!

Anhyoo, managed to sell my old laptop over the weekend, so need a new one now. Thinking i want a more portable one with the ability to play some games on medium settings. Got my eye on one of these babies when they come out:

    http://www.tomshardware.com/news/X11-U2442-U2440-Ivy_Bridge-laptops,15836.html

Only thing is, i'm not sure whether to go with the 1366x768 resolution vs 1600x900. I dont do any coding and only occasional work via remote login (although 1366x768 would be a little painful for that), but the extra fps for games is what i'm concerned about...

    still we shall see

Give yourself 5 or gig, you're worth it.

yeah i saw that one too. Doesn't seem to come with a Nvdia 640M though which is my minimum requirement.

What i did find from Asus though was this baby:
    http://www.anandtech.com/show/5897/new-asus-transformer-book-ultrabook-meets-tablet

now THAT kicks the ass of your feckin surface :)

if it weighs under 2kg and comes with a decent mobile GPU it would almost be a nobrainer. the ipad could go striaght back to mazuma mobile :)

wont be out till october at the earliest though.
