    Uggh, that part was so boring in HL2.
    The road trip was one of the best parts in HL2 for me. Just cruising, shooting some dudes, exploring some houses. Great stuff.

    @skuzzbag have you got always run on in the options?

    nades as misdirection and crouch!

    This is definitely playing like the original half life for me, I blaze through it then get stuck after about 3-4 hours, go back to it and realize I just missed something obvious and bash on for another 4 hours. Tis good.

    @skuzzbag

    Try lobbing a grenade to distract it. before running in the opposite direction. It's a bit hit 'n' miss, but that's how I did it just now!

    @CrispyXUK

    I'd argue that that's part of its charm! Cutscenes are not my forte and where you're supposed to be going is not that obscure in most cases; so far I only got stuck once...

    Always run is off. Crouching seems to just annoy it and it homes in on me ;)

    Managed to get past it by just running but it's not really in the spirit of the original!

    I don't seem to recall everyone knowing Freeman as well as they do either. In the intro everyone seems to be your best mate (wasn't it suppose to be your first day?). Same seems to go for enemies as well.

    There's a mod you can get CrispyXUK. It has a mini map. huuuge waypoint arrows to your next objective and if you press H a zelda style helper pops up with hints and encouraging words.... oh and third person mode ;)

    /edit, Played for 30 mins, well impressed so far, back to it!

    The dune buggy bits in HL2 were superb! A welcome change from blasting and they helped convey a sense of scale - City 17 and the surroundings felt enormous. Not many games manage that, especially linear shooters.

    I only ever played it twice but yeah, I think this is in line with the original. Although I had the same thought last night about the enemies.
    I bumped into a few marines so far and dispatched them. I ran into a few more now and one of them called out "something somethign FREEMAN!! Something", which struck me as odd. It didn't feel like I'd done anything worthy of notoriety amongst the grunts yet.

    The dune buggy parts in HL2 were fantastic at first, but when I finally passed that section I was glad (and relieved). I believe they call it "pacing"... and in that regard HL2's was rather sublime.

    The lengthy Gentle Ben boat bits though were defintely some of the game's best moments and a lasting highlight for me.

    Quick saving makes everything easy (I played it on hard difficulty).

    Also, how can you not like the jeep bit in HL2.

    Just my imagination or are soldiers a lot more lethal. I remember them being good shots but not this good.

    Not had as much time to play this since Friday as I'd hoped. One question, has On a Rail retained its sublime atmosphere? It was always my favourite part of the game.

    I disliked them at first, but replayed them recently and enjoyed them. Nice break of pace and it's a different atmosphere as you get to explore the little homesteads dotted about.

    HL1 was a lot harder than HL2, which was piss easy even on hard.

    Took me all night to get past Blast Pit. I pretty much danced the "fuck you, you stupid game" dance when I did it.
