Brief recap: If it is Gary Mitchell…

During one of the voyages of the starship enterprise, the ship encounters an energy field that zaps him and the ships doctors which starts to slowly evolve them into Q like beings. Mitchell goes mental, Kirk kills him with the help of the doctor, who also dies at mitchells hand. The death scene, however, is ambiguous enough for him to have possibly survived it as you don’t explicitly see him die.

Basically, if it is Mitchell, he has the power to do all that to earth by himself.
They wouldn't leave this back story out so I think any villain we see will have their origin in this film too otherwise you'd alienate the casual crowd they're aiming for.

    You dare to strike Scurrcules!?

He does have one draped over himself for a bit. He wears the starfleet insignia around his neck for the whole film however.

There would be as much introduction needed as there would be for khan. Both have been 'wronged' on previous missions and left to die. Also, mitchell makes it more personal.

Unless, obviously, its neither of them and just some guy who goes crazy.

I think it will be Mitchell with shades of Khan thrown in.
But I really don't think we'll have a scene where Kirk explains what happened to make this guy this way.
I reckon that 9 minute preview will show us a pre credits sequence (similar to the first film) that sets up Sherlock's character.

In all honesty, I think a mega powerful psychic is just too sci-fi, even for a film where people can transport matter. It will take too much setting up and would jar with the setting.

I would like it to be mitchell but its clearly going to be khaaaaaan.

Would be nice if it is genuinely someone new and all this Gary Mitchell / Khan malarkey is just a red herring.

Also, aside from the blink-and-you'll-miss-it Simon Pegg, was there any Bruce Greenwood in the trailer? Was there any Chekov? Any McCoy?

The hand thing does strongly hint at Khan.

McCoy was running with Kirk through the red trees. Didn't see Chekov mind. Sulu's in the Jap trailer.

Mail seems to think it's Khan.

Edit: That's the worst, content-lite speculative bullshit article I've ever seen. Even for the Mail it's embarrassing.

    Warzone - pink plants
Organisation on the enterprise - some ceremony in a large city building

What was the last AAA action film baddie who wasn't a physical powerhouse? Joker?

I wonder if there's any chance of the Borg ever being in these movies.

@Gambit1977 Let's hope not. That is one Trek baddie that has been thoroughly fucked up through over use.

I really, REALLY can't work out the shape of the Enterprise as it rises from the water. The 'NCC' is written somewhere where there should only be empty space, the nacelles look very stubby and very close together, but most damningly there isn't a saucer. At all.

Woah woah woah! The Borg was ruined by voyager. I think there's still potential there. First Contact was a great film.

Far better than the obvious Klingons we'll get in the next.

    It's not the Enterprise.

    Explains it all.

    or

Fuck me....They've bought something over from the prime universe into this universe.

That'll screw the living shit out of everyone.

    Come and get it cumslingers!
