I stopped watching Star Trek seriously after TNG. It just seemed to veer more away from Sci-Fi and into the realms of soap opera in space. -

And it really touched on Deep Serious 9Issues.
Not like the cheese TNG coughed up.

Maybe it was the first few that put me off. Was a long time ago now but it just didn't feel like proper Star Trek. I may have to revisit it though if you say it got better.
Aw... but it was so good (After a ropey first couple of seasons maybe).
I always thought that Star Trek was pretty cheesy, it's one of it's more endearing features.

Registered 10 years agoStar Trek as a TV offering has become a dinosaur as a franchise.
I've watched few of the recent incarnations and I find the same problem with them all. They are bland, anadyne and utterly without any artistic merit - for the most part at least. And it's all so fucking 'happy clappy let's all get along', catering for people who find the real world that little bit too scary, and long for one that rewards honour and integrity etc.
Essentially, if ever the phrase 'Gh3y' was justifiable in relation to a TV series, I would use it to describe Star Trek.
I also believe that it has not been any sort of benchmark since the days of TNG and possiblly DS9. Since then TV Sci Fi has diversified and actually developed a sense of humour in some cases. I loved the early Farscape, and every time I catch an episode of Stargate: SG1 I am constantly amazed at the level of effects work now being used.
This is only the TV series I might add, I am a big fan of movies 1, 2, 4 and 6, and count them among some of my favourite movies.

Registered 9 years agoI didn't bother watching Enterprise the moment I heard that godawful theme song. WTF were they thinking?
On the plus side, it got me doing un-filtered Google searches for T-Pol

Registered 9 years agoAcording to Patrick Stewart there's also plans to do another TNG movie after this prequal. Dispite him saying "this is the last one" after every one he's in.
And the Enterprise theme song actauly came from the end credits for the Patch Adams movie. 0_o -

I think that simple sentence sums it all up nicely. None of the series post-TNG (perhaps DS9) have brought anything new or fresh. It's the same old po-faced, basic mechanics right down to sticking a pretty woman in tight-fitting clothing.
Star Trek as a TV offering has become a dinosaur as a franchise.
Enterprise seems to be doing fanservice, every story arc being along the lines of "look! Here's the Klingons/Andorians/Romulans for the first time!" which is commendable I suppose, but at the same time uninspired, by-the-numbers and a little boring. They even resort to time travel on a regular basis. Perhaps because without it people would notice that the main dish of the series is actually really dull.

Never a truer word spoken. In its 4 seasons I think Farscape brought more to the sci-fi table than the past 10 years of Star Trek.
Farscape > Starttrek.

Registered 8 years agoSo, if it's not a prequel, then that ought to place it on the original Enterprise, with Kirk, Spock and McCoy all present (I was worried that a Kirk/Spock prequel wouldn't work, as I always felt McCoy was an essential character). His statement on Treknobabble is perhaps worrying too; I don't like how everything can be reconfigured as a sort of deus ex machina. Granted, the films have never really resorted to this, it was always the characters that took centre-stage, rather than the deflector dish firing inverse quantum slipstreaming tachyons.
It could work very well, but it could also be abysmal. They need to get the actors (and their acting) absolutely spot on. Trying to remake one of the most famous (and probably one of the most widely loved) characters in television history, 40 years later and with a different actor is an almost insurmountable challenge, and one that could really put the nail in the coffin if done wrongly. -

A good point, well made - they could get away with it in the case of BSG only because the original was not ionic/ well-loved/ repeated every year on BBC2.

This really could be the end if its shit. Maybe they should wait another 5 - 10 years before messing with this kind of stuff.
I'm very anxious about the whole affair. Especially seeing as the new BSG ends this season.
I'll be left with no space based TV action!

The only Star Trek worth anything is the original series. Everything else has dated horribly.
