Samsung too common? The reason people are buying Samsung HDTV's is because MS are using their LCDs to demo the XBox 360 on. If it's good enough for MS it's good enough for you.

Pretty daft reason to buy one tho isn't it? Just because Samsung have struck up a deal to supply LCD TVs with Microsoft does not mean that they are the best - just supplied them with the best deal - a glorified form of sponsorship.

The other TVs in the Sharp range have been getting goodish reviews. Toshiba and Philips also do some good screens at around the same place.

That's a fair point Ssue, but you would have thought that to to demo the XBox 360 Microsoft would choose a good quality TV. Whilst probably not **the best** I'm certainly impressed with mine! It has every input known to man and the integrated digital TV is superb.

Though if anyone does buy one, be warned it's a dust magnet! But they do provide you with a lovely blue cloth to wipe it all off.

Well you'd think it's daft except that they really are superb TVs. Samsung LCD screens tend to be damn good anyway but the models that MS are using are very, very nice indeed.

Go and have a look at one in somewhere like Currys. Even with the shite picture that they pump through them you can see a clear difference to the other sets next to it.

It's certainly the one I'm getting and I'd made that decision based on a fair bit of research way before MS had plumped for it. There are better LCD TVs but they're usually much more expensive.

Tricky. Some Currys stores have HDTV feeds - Guildford for example- I looked at the Samsung and got a Philips instead.

/still has open mind as it's going to be several months before I can afford to buy one!

    I see it as this:

everyone is buying a samsung because they think "ah best tv ever for xbox 360"

well, I want a tv that isn't part of some marketing scheme and I have been told by many people that the sharp is superior in picture quality standard definition and high definition.

korean companies like samsung are high output / slightly cheap product companies... the samsung panels seem to get slated on many av discussion boards because they have pretty crap picture quality... and I don't like how anything samsung i have owned has broken (mobile phones, tv, stereo) :/

anyway, anyone know if theres some reviews online for my sharpy?

Tricky - Its a 32PF5520 - looks a bit plain and grey - I hate reflective surrounds - but picture wise its lovely. There was not much info about when I bought mine - no reviews.

Have to disagree with HarryB. Samsung have been making some of the best LCD panels for years - they are the market leader. And I've never seen them slagged off on discussion boards.

Apparently Samsung are going through the process of replacing the current range - avforums gossip.

No, from what I read they have greater or the same features and not all black.

    A new 'Milano' model.

The old model - not the same size but the style is the same across the range.

As I said up a bit I got a 32PF5520D which apparently uses the same panel as the 32PF7520D - which adds Pixel Plus.

The 32PF9986 is the same panel again but adds Pixel Plus 2 and some wierd ambient light shining around the side of the TV - very highly reviewed tho.

As I turn all picture enhancements off I went for the basic model.

I saw that. Find it strange that its taken all this time to do the first review of it. I bought my 5520 in July and it and the rest of the range had been out for a while already.

The ambient light put me off the 9986 as the LCD is used in the same room as a projector.

I read somewhere that Samsung produces most LCD panels and sells them to other big manufacturers, who "fine tune" them.

HarryB - Avforums is the place to check for pictures of peoples own kit - but a still image is pretty useless for indicating a TV quality imho.

went to currys today for a gander, the sharp was being fed a terrible tv feed.... the samsung was running the incredibles on dvd... i cant help feeling the design of the samsung looks a bit tacky when you see it in the flesh... that shiny plastic isn't too greay but the picture was pretty good and the dnie did make a big difference to the picture... menus were rather nice looking too... so im probably just going to go for the samsung in the end... although I will try and get the sharp connected to something proper so I can really asses the picture quality, bit unfair to leave it on a 40-way split aerial :/... it looked so classy

lol im going crazy here, can i ask any samsung owners if the screen is good as a pc monitor, too?
gonna have EVERYTHING connected to this, so it must be pretty good... my jvc cant handle it and seems to break every 6 months from me using every single connection it has on it... I'm guessing that's bad for the tv?

Heh - that's all well and good until you realise that the screens are another 2-300 quid more expensive than they are online and there's no way they'll match that. So it's another case of, "Yes, that's nice - thanks for demonstrating it." then leaving, going home and looking up the best price on kelkoo or something ;-)
  • Deleted user 26 October 2005 11:50:11
I bought the 32" Samsung HDTV LCD Screen and the dust aside it's marvellous.

But then I've already said that about 100 times.

yes well my dad seems to cause a riot if he doesn't get the price he wants so I'm sure he'll get it out of them... I shall do this on the weekend and get them to demonstrate the 2 I am considering side by side and then go through a hell of a lot of tests.

    What dust?

The cheapest place that sold the TV I bought was Currys Online. The big stores do not price match or haggle from my experience.
