I hope no-one "inherits" the user records.

The odd part about the blog post is the suggestion that they owed a ton of money in software development costs. I imagined that it was an in-house effort. It seems a bit silly to invest large sums of cash in a business so at risk of being shut down.

Nah, from what I heard they didn't keep any logs, and without logs the user details are next to useless. Besides I would have hoped that with everything going on over the last few months they would have a big "PURGE" button ready which melted all of the server's hard disks at a moments notice :)

    Inheriting user records, you say?

    I just got this email:

    Hi ex-Newzbin user.

Lamenting the departed site? Dreading doing Usenet the old skool
way? Think the clone NZB sites suck?

Good news: we are Newzbin Two, and we have glad tidings:
NEWZBIN IS BACK! and we are the new management. The crew got most
of the original Newzbin source code and the main databases.
We loved it too much to let it die.

The catch? We wont be up for a very short while cos things need
to be done. For starters we need a cool domain name; also we
need to hack on the code some more to make it run. We are nearly
there but it is very complicated. We reckon we'll up very soon.

So don't drift off to those lame-ass wannabe NZB sites. Hang on
for a little longer and the Big Dog will be back.
For news keep an eye on these news sites:
    http://deepsharer.wordpress.com/
    http://www.usenetshack.com/
    http://torrentfreak.com/

They have my email address...what else they got?

Yeah I got that email too and that's the first thing I wondered: great, so you've hacked the site and you're essentially boasting to everyone that you've got our email addresses while telling us you're going to recreate the site.

    I'm not impressed.

And it's back! Now run by the people who nabbed the code apparently. It's struggling a bit until they can get more server power behind it though.

There's an interview about it here.

Appears to be gone again. Nice that they're transferring newzbin credits though.

Anybody use SABnzbd as their download client?
I've just discovered it and set it up on an old laptop that ive turned into a nas/download box.

Coupled with Sickbeard, this has to be the best thing ever for TV shows.

    TLDR people :

After messing with it some more I'm convinced this in singularly the best thing I've discovered.

For the rest of you :

Both of these are web based so you configure them using a browser. Since they are setup on network any device i use can see them.

sickbeard is simply genius. its essentially a pvr for downloadable tv shows.

You set it up with links to sites you use for nzbs like newzbin, nzbmatrix etc etc.

you add a tv show and it goes off to some site (tv.com possibly) and builds a page with every single episode broken down by season with details about the episode etc.

From this day forward it knows when the next episode airs and will automatically search the sites you've added, in the order selected and when it finds one that matches the quality (SD/HD) and language selected it will queue it up in sabnzbd.

If the quality you selected isn't found, it flags it as low quality and queues it anyway, but will keep its eyes peeled for a better one and replace it.

Additionally, you can also add any and all episodes from the past and it will go away and search for them and queue them up for you.

now sabnzbd is a run of the mill nzb downloaded but again its web based. the magic thing is it is customisable via scripts. sickbeard has its own script for it.

So once the download is completed, checked, repaired and extracted as usual it will pass the download over to sickbeard

    then even more magic happens.

It will rename and auto archive into season folders.
Finally, it goes and gets screenshots/cover art and other associated images and builds up XML files that contain info about the show/episode that can be read by XBMC or similar software.

I thought newsleecher was idleware, i don't even need to search for episodes anymore or maintain any semblence of a library. Its all just 'done' for me.

why did i not find this sooner ....

Looks very interesting crash, cheers for the links. Is it fairly easy to setup then? Currently use Grabit and Newzbin.

Sorry, been really busy all weekend.

Sickbeard comes in various flavours but I couldn't get the standard windows binary to work correctly so used source version running via python

    setup instructions here

I've decided to drop the XP installation now tho and I'm going to dive into linux and create more permanent NAS/download box

no probs, if you run into problems configuring them I'll try and help. This guide helped me setup sickbeard once it was up and running.

If you're going at it with ubuntu like I will be, this is the guide I've found for that
