Anyone been to Oktoberfest?

    I and a few mates are heading off on a majorly long distance-wise, but fairly short time-wise trip on wednesday.

    The plan is to head into London on tuesday night, see Avenged Sevenfold at the Astoria and stay at a mate's in London. Next stage is to get teh 07:30 ferry from Dover to Calais and speed across Europe to Munich, where we'll settle down for the evening and go to Oktoberfest the next day. After this we'll be heading straight to Amsterdam for 2 nights and hitting the coffee shops before heading home.

    Anyway, anyone been to Oktoberfest (or going this year)? Any tips on which tent to go for and food to grab/avoid?

    I've been, it's blatently for tourists. There's a beer festival in Berlin which is far better at the start of summer.

    It's not shit, you get to see drunken fat men in lederhosen quaffing vast steins of wheat beer. A few oompah style bands and 1 million american tourists wondering where the bud is.

    Oh, tips...

    If there's any Erdinger there (which there will be) get several buckets of dunkel and wake up happy in a bush. Sauerkraut and sausage is the one thing you can't get away from, but I love it, you might think different, sauerkraut seems to have a bad rep over here for some reason but it's fecking ace. Think red or green cabbage cooked with vinegar... Actually it tastes a lot better than it sounds. German food is pretty fricken hefty so don't wear tight troosers ;)

    there is a huge Oktoberfest every year in Texas and I love it. Lots of beer drinking.

    Been once but I don't remember a whole lot about it. Went out to Munich in 1992 for a training course and the Octoberfest was just up the road. Remember going on a big wheel after downing a load of beer and really suffered the next morning..

    Getting there on the Thursday night so probably won't do much that night. Have the whole of Friday and Saturday reserved for whatever may come.

    Is the beer expensive?

    Good stuff, I'll try to not over do it, but I'd imagine there'll be beer everywhere. Hoping I can find our tents at the end of every night :)

    I love it - everytime I go its fun.

    Lots of beer, lots of roast chicken, lots of pretzel and lots of apple strudel. Can't go wrong in my books.

    Heading out to Berlin on Friday, getting into Munchen on Sunday, doing the 'fest on Mon and hopefully making it back alive on Tues.

    That'll make it 4 times...

    No. It's not particularly urban in that way, but it's fairly picturesque in places.

    Hmm, not sure. There are lots of oldworld places doted around like Dachau, Freising or Erding, but it's a general rather than a specific place. It's a very German town, so will probably be interesting regardless if you aren't used to German architecture.

    The area around the Hofbrauhaus is a good start.
