Registered 9 years agoLie down. Your body needs to realise it needs to get to sleep, and it won't do that if you're active. Read a book in bed, maybe.
Lie down. If you're trying to get to sleep, make sure you don't get caught up in daydreams. Try to reach a meditative state, where things that enter your head are registered and then discarded instead of developed.
Monitor your breathing. Is your breathing fast, and excited? Try to calm it down so that your body relaxes.
Here's a good exercise: Take in a breath. Now, when you let it out, don't breathe out. Just relax your body, and your breath should naturally leave you. If you continue to do this for a while, you will notice your body becomes more relaxed. Also you may notice strange feelings in your feet, hands, and spine, but those will be quite relaxing too.
Have you ever watched someone sleep? The way they breathe is important. If your breath leaves you as a relaxed motion, you're breathing like someone who is asleep. Trust me, this will help you fall asleep as long as you keep your mind free of things that activate your brain, so don't think about shopping or work, or your friends or anything.
Hope that helps.

Registered 10 years agoIf I'm insomniac I find a could way of dropping of is to mentally play through a film that I know well. Don't try and rush through it. Try to get the dialogue and pacing right (but don't worry excessively about accuracy!).

Registered 11 years agoFirst question, are you tired?
If not, stop trying to go to sleep.
Otherwise you need to relax, stop looking at the computer and remain in one place, preferably the bed, pick up a book you've already read and isn't a action packed thriller. Most of all relax. -

Registered 9 years agoGood point, sam. If I try to go to bed much earlier than I'm used to, it often results in me lying awake long after the time I usually fall asleep. I'm certain this is a psychological effect, though, rather than physiological, but it's really, really difficult to break it. -

Like sam has said already, I find that going to bed and then reading till my eyes close automatically almost always does the trick. Getting up again, drinking something, turning on the TV/PC however, does not.

Smoking pot is a mental illusion. Yes you sleeep, but not properly and your body doesn't properly relax and recharge cos its bizzee dealing with the THC's IMO and IME (in my experience)
Alcohol is the same. Instead of recharging yer body is bizzee with the alcohol....
The best way is to get used to life without drugs (alcohol, THC's, sleeeping pills etc...) and finding yer own equilibrium. Tjis may take a while though but its worth it in the end.. IME...99 problems and being ginger is one

Registered 10 years agoIts infuriating, I could sleep for England on week days, but come the weekend I find it impossible to lie in. I wake up after 7-8 hours without fail, even with a belly full of booze. -
