IIRC it can handle HD if you re-encode into not-that-high bitrate XVID, but it is only a 733MHz Celeron :)

I *heart* my softmodded Xboxen. They're great.

I got a HDX1080 to deal with 1080p/720p. I still luff my modded XBMC xboxen though.

    (Softmods are for pussies)

*edit* It's only manly if a soldering iron, welding kit or barbeque is involved.

    I'm a grumpy bastard.

Love mine still. The new skins like xTv and Mediastream are a joy. Me old softmodded one struggles with a movie collection ~ around 870+. But soon as the old crt tv dies the little server next to the xbox will take over. Thought it was packing up last night but the gf had the sound up too high and it was fake sound failure :(

I always said Microsoft should have hired the guys who made this to make the 360 dash.

Still thinking about softmodding an Xbox.

    Couple of questions.

Hard drive size, the original one is small so upgrading is a possibility. Is that a good choice or should I just use an external hard drive for all my movies etc. ?

I used to network from my PC, nice and simple. Much better quality than my 360 too (which had to encode them on the fly). Dont think you can use a run of the mill external drive though.

So what's the best way to do XBMC? Is it still a modded eggsbox or is there a better HDMI way?

This looks great, very close to buying an old Xbox, but they're so UGLY. I don't suppose there's any smaller version/mod available?

    Probably not.

no, there was a fella that built a smart looking mod but really you're either looking at an old xbox or a small lower powered pc near the telly. There's some other options such as the PopcornHour. The old xbox will do 720 no problem, for higher hd you'll need a pc platform.

Not too bothered about HD, I saw a 160gb media player in PC World for £70 today, might just pick that up. Shame, I wanted to play Xboxen games too.

The old Xbox *will* do 720p (or 1080i) but will really struggle with most HD video. H264 kills it dead, even low-res. Re-encoded Xvid at not-too-high a bitrate will play in 720p on XBMC though.

Might be a stupid question... but can you run this on the PC? I'm so sick of the shitty options available on the PS3 and the 360. I want my XBMC back!

[Edit - I should have just searched. Fuck yes. :D ]

I'm a big, big fan of XBMC. It just works.

If it gets to the point where it doesn't, I'll try out other stuff. :)

But but but..... Boxee uses XBMC, it has just got some extra things thrown in. Get some friends set up on it, you can see what they've watched, rate your videos and so on.
