I actually felt quite sorry for Paris. They've bid three times, have already built a lot of the venues, and it is a truly fantastic, impressive city. Yeah, the people can be a bit rude, but that's modern urban living for you - New Yorkers, Londoners, Parisians... spot the pattern. Time is money etc. |
It seemed to me that we sort of blagged it at the last minute with a very slick presentation based around "inspiring the next generation wiv da sport" or some such bollocks - as if we weren't busy selling off school playing fields and our kids weren't obese crisp-guzzling couch-ridden tv addicts - and lots of shiny CGI sports facilities magically sweeping across East London, a message from the Queen, Mandela (how did we get him on board?), Blair and of course the cheeky charm of Becks wittering on about his roots in the 'manor'. It was a full on shmooze assault and it worked. Style over substance. All very NuLab really.
