Being a young lady I was deeply upset about the sexism on show in Sid Meier's Pirates. Why couldn't I choose to be a lady pirate?? Despite the tawdry thoughts of some of you out there, I don't really want to spend a night of gaming dancing with big breasted women with the hope of marrying them!! I love the other parts of the game though.

Iím not convinced this is the best example of a sexist game, although Iím sure there are plenty that are. Itís a period game for starters, Iím not certain, but I donít think there were female pirates at that time. Some of the attitudes and representation of females in the game could be seen as sexist, but again its period, so easily justified on that basis. There are plenty of other games there are far less debatable though.

Have you got time to be worrying about sexism in Pirates? Shouldn't you being getting the dinner on? ;o)

A pirates game is bound to be based on bearded blokes swigging grog and leching after women though. That's pirates. It may well be sexist (not played it myself) and it's true that there's not really any female centred equivalent in gaming.

Problem with demographics - most of the people who buy games are male, so games are aimed at males, so most of the people who buy games are male, so most games.... etc

You need to rally your sisters to the gaming cause! Set up a modern suffragette movement. Throw yourself under a horse at the Derby. That sort of thing usually works ;o)

The main character is a man, therfor he'd want to marry and dance with women. That's perfectly normal considering the character you play.
Furthermore it's a pirate game, going with that style you'd find allot of women in corsets and cleavage dresses, fitts the style.
Makes sense, when you design a game you choose a character and a style that fitts it.
It would be nice if all games had the complete freedom to choose what your character is and how it's played but considering such open endedness adds to the development costs of the game it's unrealistic to expect that in all games.

maybe they did have beards, but they weren't necessarily blokes.

Geena Davis in Cutthroat Island doesn't count!

Fair enough - there were a few. But it's not a fact based game is it? It's based on pirate legends and pirate fiction. Long Jane Silver just wouldn't have worked.

It all depends on what you class as sexist. I mean, in Ninja Gaiden, you can only play as a man-ninja, but there is a female character who is strong. And then they dress her up in the most un-PC way possible. Then again, is Ryu portrayed any differently? Those rippling muscles, those firm, proud buttocks...
    Err... Aiieeeee!

On the subject of sexist games, what would you all put forward as the most blatantly sexist game of all time??

Battle Rapist was pretty much the most sexist thing I've ever seen. There wasn't an option to rape the male players anywhere in the clip I saw!

Funny how any time a new "girl" appears on EG it's always has to be a sock puppet.

But then isn't portraying men as evil sexual predators just as sexist?

It's not so much the girl thing as much as that I found the post in itself to be a bit strange.

Edit: Also, the name Homosceptic. Not really suited to give a serious impression.

@marilena That is seven lady pirates when there were thousands of men pirates the reason you don't see lady pirates is A) it was considered bad luck to have a lady on board your ship and B) Lady pirates that didn't already have a Killer reputation Got raped
