    Personally I am hoping for another 10 year cycle or whatever the last generation was. Still feels like the PS4 is relatively new (even though it's been four years), certainly not ready for another one anytime soon, even 2020 would be too soon.

    They should release the 'Sony Xbox 2' and make it more powerful than PC's are.

    I think for the first time I feel like I don’t want or need a next gen system. When you have machines capable of producing games as good looking as uncharted or horizon, what is the point of a new system? The power never gets utilised in other ways. The more interesting games tend to come later in consoles lifetime.

    Kind of content with what we have now, and would be happy to replace my current systems with newer more efficient models if they decide to break down.

    Crazy even contemplating what sort of leap the next gen will be.

    It would be absolutely fucking stupid for Sony to release PS5 that soon. They have a dominant position in the market, technology hasn't advanced sufficiently to lead to genuine next-gen visuals, and they would fragment their existing userbase. I doubt it would sell very well as too many people would just stick with the machines they have.

    We've reached the point of diminishing returns visually, so not much of a leap there. Focus needs to be elsewhere and for that better CPUs in consoles is what's needed otherwise we will just be playing the same games with only slightly better graphics.

    Don't get me wrong, I have enjoyed a lot of games this generation and continue to do so, but the brunt of them haven't really done anything different from the previous generation. Same clunky AI, overused templates, and the same old problems rearing their ugly head - even in some of the better entrants out there. There has been nothing of any real significant change. So if the next generation only has pretty pictures and a handful of new particle effects and whatnot to brag about then I'm happy not to see new consoles any time soon.

    No point releasing any new consoles until the new CPU are available at a reasonable price. GPU upgrades are meaningless to me, and VR works well enough for the consoles we have. Can't wait to upgrade to PSVR Mark 2 though admittedly

    @theincredibleaf The mid gen upgrades are a complete sales dead end. 1 in 5 PS4s are Pros, they are even going to be even less if they do it again. If upgrading in itself is your focus, just buy a PC. No one with any sense wants upgrades on a yearly basis.

    @grassyknoll Sorry wasn't sure if this was a PM or not. Thanks for the comment.

    I was mostly setting the cat amongst the pigeons with that post but I still believe Sony or Microsoft could release 18 monthly updates and it would become the norm, pretty soon and sales would be good after this acceptance.

    The gamers who shout that they would never upgrade are the same who shout things like "EA / Rockstar etc...You're dead to me", when such developers / publishers do something they justifiably deem unfair, cheap etc.

    Then those same gamers buy the next big release from those same developers / publishers.

    "Loot boxes? Man that shit was last year, I'm getting me some Battlefield 1 - Battle Of The Somme DLC*. Day 1 baby!"

    Basically, people are fickle and don't stand up for what they believed in yesterday.

    Hence, more shitty practices from these large gaming companies are imminently incoming, and will be accepted as the norm...after a little initial gnashing of teeth.

    Then I'm an old fart...Been playing games since the early 80s.

    This is the modern world.

    * I made that up.

    I think he might be right, I'm even pretty sure it will have one of those new intel/amd chips in it.

    I see Sony launching a more slim line PS4 pro to fit alongside the slicker looking Xbox One X.

    I’m sure they had 3 console revisions in the ps2 era? Would make sense as the pro is quite a hefty looking piece of kit and sounds like a steam train, which I wouldn’t be surprised they did on purpose to showcase another slicker looking version at E3 this year to sell alongside The Last Of Us 2.

    I know my onions gents.. bet on me.

    I thought there were only 2 PS1 and PS2 models but there were 3 PS3s.

    PSX, PSOne, PS2, PSTwo, PS3, PS3 Slim and PS3 Super Slim.

    There was a super-slim PS2, but that didn't come out over in the UK.

    There were so many different coloured Ps2 consoles I remember owning the original black then silver and then I brought a ps2 slim at a boot sale.

    Iirc there was the fat ps2, the slim ps2 with an external power supply and then a slim one with one built-in. I thought at the time it was quite an achievement.

    @spamdangled It wouldn't necessarily be PS5 though.

    Think of what Microsoft has done with Windows 10 being the last major version of Windows...Also Mac OS X since original release in 2001...There's only been Mac OS X...Single release with perpetual upgrades.

    When consoles become digital only or possibly even just streaming boxes in the future, this is likely the model the manufacturers adopt.

    But hardware is totally different to software, so this comparison is beyond daft. They can refresh their dashboards and bits and pieces as much as they like, and MSFT do, but that's not the same thing as delivering a brand new incremental box.

    Regardless, this year would be far too soon. It'll be 2020 at the earliest, imo, or the bump up just won't be significant enough.

    I did the same joke too. I just didn't put words, or a picture, to it. I just did it my mind. But I think I should get a mention too.
