I can't remember another instance where a game has received such a profoundly negative response before its official release. The game looks and plays fantastically well. The loot boxes aren't an issue for me as I won't be spending real money on them. There is no need to spend money on loot boxes to enjoy the game. Why is Battlefront 2 (and EA in particular) being singled out for criticism when several other recent releases have had loot boxes?

Why is company XYZ being maligned for unethical practices when other companies are unethical too? Sad.

Why is there so much negativity surrounding the turd in the swimming pool?

I can't remember another instance where there's been such a mad scramble to get out of the pool. It's a really nice swimming pool. The turd isn't an issue for me, as I'm going to just swim around it and hope that it doesn't take me by surprise and splash up in my face. Why is the turd being singled out for criticism when there are all kinds of other unpleasant things that might possibly be in the swimming pool?

No one is forcing you to swim towards the turd and touch it, after all.

The first game isn't very good at all. It's a very pretty game, but one that lacked any really considerate design. The second game looks like it unnecessarily complicates things with these loot creates and grinding and as a result I have zero faith they've actually addressed the issues of the first.

The campaign also does nothing for me as every battlefield campaign I've played has been rubbish.

But the owner of the pool is using a pole to prod it towards us, and keeps telling us to touch the thickest end of the turd as it is "best value".

There's also the chance of different kinds of turds appearing, from runny to hard stools. If you grind enough you can get the one's with sweetcorn in.

And I can buy the turd with sweetcorn using real money as a shortcut, if I so choose? What a value!

They played this on giantbomb's friday evening show. After 10 minutes they just turned it off. Looks amazing graphically imo, but wouldn't want to play it.

Because it's a pretty decent looking game that's blatantly been compromised by greed, turning it into game with a progression model that would barely be acceptable in a free to play game that they want 50 quid for on top of it.

40 hours to unlock the most iconic character in the star wars universe.

The game is actually really good but the ftp mechanics are the worst I've seen in a full priced game.

A full price game that's pay to win. I would assume that's why.

    Loot crates is the answer.

I've been enjoying the trial but I can safely say I won't be spending a penny on loot crates.

Because gamers and Star Wars fans have a vicious Venn covering perceived grievance and perceived amount of fucks the universe has over the pathetic whining.

I've seen a couple of articles around the place, but I wouldn't call it overwhelming or anything. Sure, there are probably dozens of YouTube videos and comment threads about how awful it is, but that's what youtube videos and comment threads are like. It's the internet.

As for me, I give not a single shit about this game. But I'd imagine people who plonk down a great deal of money for something, want to feel like they're getting the "complete" package, rather than getting rinsed out of more of their money for stuff they want. This doesn't seem like a particularly bad example, but maybe it's just the thing that tipped people over or something.

Do we really need two SWBF 2 threads discussing practically the same thing?

I'm sad. One of my favourite game franchises has been buried by a developer I loved.

I don't get it, I constantly get shut down as a 'corporate apologist' or something but I guess I'm just easily pleased. I've played a fair bit of Battlefront 2 on the trial and enjoy it, the gameplay is still just 'ok' rather than amazing, but it does look and sound fantastic, and is much more forgiving than most multiplayer games. You can do cool looking stuff quite easily.

I'm impressed they're still doing expansions, but they're free for all players, so no more split playerbase, that's a huge deal to me and I wish Call of Duty and Battlefield would do the same.

It taking 40 hours to unlock a character (it doesn't by the way, that's ignoring all the non-repeatable challenges, it seems like it will take 10-20 hours depending on skill) doesn't seem that ridiculous to me. I'm never going to buy a loot box, but I like having things to grind or work towards. I like prestiging in Call of Duty, I liked grinding factions in WoW, I liked unlocking all the cheats and multiplayer characters in Goldeneye on the N64 or the other racers in Diddy Kong Racing. Once I've unlocked everything in a game I get bored pretty quick, because that's how my brain works, progress is fun.

Yes it'd be more interesting if characters like Vader were hidden behind difficult challenges rather than grinds, but it's not the end of the world. You still have plenty of (so far I would say more powerful) heroes to choose from like Darth Maul and Rey, the game is still lots of fun without them, and I might even enjoy Vader being a slightly rarer sight for the first few days, it'll be more surprising when he does appear.

AAA games are super expensive to make now and the price of games hasn't gone up alongside inflation so I figure we either a) Accept more expensive games and start paying £80 for them but getting everything b) put up with optional loot boxes that some richer players will pay for the unlock stuff early, or c) pay for expansions and season passes like in Call of Duty to get more maps and features.

Personally I'm fine with a) or b), and would prefer b) because it means I spend less money.

TL:DR - I'd much prefer they hide some characters behind unlocks than hide maps behind paid expansions, this is an improvement over the last game.

Yup, like Ubisoft did for Rainbow Six, I'm hoping it will be the new model. I mean the first expansion we're getting on December 13th is already pretty generous with a new Galactic Assault map, new Starfighter map, two new characters, a new ship and new story content. I'm expecting 2-3 more packs of a similar size (or maybe one of the packs will have more maps for the smaller modes since this one doesn't seem to have any.
