Watching the Direct mini and the only game I think I'll be getting is Mario Tennis. Almost tempted by Hyrule Warriors but have Fire Emblem Warriors to play first. I'm not a fan of 2D platformers so will likely pass on Kirby and DK.

Just checking the 10-12 games applies only to current gen machines and PCs right? I can buy retro games for my 2DSXL as many as I want

As somebody enjoying this thread as spectator sport, you really should name it "Creative Excuses".

Just finished Breath of the Wild, woot woot. Tempted to make my first purchase of the year as a reward. Horizon or Nioh. But really I should just dive back into Skyrim.

I'm quite tempted by Pokken Tournament. I liked it on the Wii U and enjoyed it. Dunno if it's worth a spot on the top ten.

That was a game I would ordinarily be interested in but not under this new challenge.

Rabbids and Xenoblade I'm tempted by but I think I'm better served giving Xcom 2 another crack and finally getting round to FF15 (did they ever finish it?)

At the moment only MH World and RDR 2 are certain purchases. This could be pretty easy.

/anticipates drunken rebellious splurge in a few weeks.

@monkman76 I’m probably a few days away from completing the Zelda Dlc ( will mop up some side quests along the way) and tempted by Nioh and horizon too since they are on sale. But a bit worried by opting for horizon straight after the majesty that is botw. Albeit only playing it for 15 hours or so. I don’t know how I’m going React to it

I've been tempted by Nioh myself but I'm torn. I love character action games and RPGs, but have bounced off Souls games and Bloodborne (especially Bb)

Eh, I thought BotW was very good but not the masterpiece that many see it as. But I also have Skyrim so I don't really need another large open world game. I really want Nier, but not at full price.

@THFourteen There's a demo for Dragon Quest Builders. Check it out! I really enjoyed it. Its a simple game, but it has a lot of charm.

On a completely different note; If Mario Tennis Aces has motion control support (and I imagine it should do), then that may be my first purchase of the year. That thought never crossed my mind at the time.

First purchase of the year for me is the radiant historia 3ds port. Not really taking part in this but maybe I can keep my game buying in check.

@FatSternKikwi even making some kind of record is a huge step forward. I buy many more games than expected.

    @THFourteen

Tennis Elbow 2013 with mods is the best Tennis game currently available.

Heh. I had been tempted with that, but 30 hours with I Am Setsuna has reminded me why I don't really dig JRPGs. :)

Can we do carbon trading style deals? This ties in nicely with my New Year's resolution of spending less time playing games and more time doing useful things. I've got Nier and Uncharted Lost Legacy on my 'buy at some point' list and plenty in the backlog to be getting on with. I reckon I can get up the ante to 5 purchases this year. Anyone want to buy my spare 5?

No, this is serious. It's not some trifling matter we can ignore, like the environment.

@JoelStinty Xenoblade was my last purchase of 2017. Looking forward to getting into it very soon. Just a few more days of Dragon Quest left, me thinks.

@DangerousDave_87 builders or a main entry? Think I will make builders my game after xenoblade. Wanted it on the PS4 but never got round to it. Think portable play will sway me to get it for the Switch.

I'm playing Dragon Quest IX at the minute. I can definitely vouch for Builders though. I'm strongly considering double dipping as I had that on PS4 as well. It's not perfect, but it's a solid game with a lot of charm. Something to chip away at between other games.

Much as I’d like to have DQ builders on Switch - and the demo plays well - I’ve barely played my Vita version. I’ll get back to that instead. Another off the list :-)

Well, I think one of my purchases this year will be Project Octopath Traveller, or whatever it ends up being called, for the Switch. Downloaded the demo on a whim without knowing anything about it apart from being a jrpg, and my word, it's absolutely gorgeous.

Seems to have a fun battle system too, cracking music, some very committed voice acting and a nice, slightly gritty tone (mentions of merchants being gutted & such).

    One to watch, for sure.

I haven’t played the demo yet. Got it downloaded but just haven’t felt the need to play it. Perhaps one rainy afternoon Ill give It a whirl. There seems to be a fair number of demos on the store as well, seems like a age old relic from the past!

@OnlyJoeKing couldn't stand that game myself when I played the demo. I really didn't like the combat (which seemed to be constant) and the dialog was very poor to me. I played it to the end to see if I was missing something, but it didn't appeal to me at all. But then I couldn't stand Disagea either.

Purchased my second game of the year. Only eight slots left!

    1. Pinball FX3 (counting it despite it all being dlc and buying most tables in 2017)
    2. Pokken Tournament DX

    Definitely buying in the future:

    3. Mario Tennis Aces
    4. Kirby Star Allies

@GuybrushThreepwood I can see why you might not have liked the dialogue. I think I took it as 'laughably over the top', in a fun, cheesy way, than just being straight bad. It's not exactly Shakespeare, though!

I'm playing The Evil Within 2 at the moment and although I think it's a great game, some of plot and the dialogue there is appalling, so maybe coming from that helped. The voice actors in POT really get stuck in too.

I'm not entirely sold on the battle system tbh just yet, but it looked fun enough to me as basically a jrpg noob. Pretty lights, too.

Between this challenge and the front page article I'm really looking forward to my first purchase of the year in MHW. And, I've also not furiously hunted down footage or info on the game like I normally do.

It's like being a teen in the 90s again, waiting on that one game release going on nothing but a few screens and a preview to entice you.
