    Gah!

Is it just me or are the practice targets for things like tyre wear and fuel conservation absolutely impossible to manage?

I started with McLaren Honda and I just can't succeed in those challenges, I am either seconds behind the lap time I need or deep in the red for the fuel conservation/tyre wear gauge!

    It is just impossible!

Fuel conservation is ok as long as you lift and coast in to corners, I got perfect score at Australia in a Williams.

Can't say I've had an issue, maybe try turning the difficulty down?

I remember in F1 2016 turning the AI difficulty down reduced all the test targets too.

Ok since I posted this I am still trying to finisht eh first race! I gave up on tyre management and have been racing but I haven't actually managed to finish a race without crashing.. maybe I should not have bought this game...

I haven't had any problems completing the practice targets.

There is an annoying bug with engine wear if you aren't doing 100% races. Hopefully codemasters will fix it but it wouldn't be the first time they'd leave a huge bug in career mode.

Have you tried playing with the racing line turned on? Also if you are using a controller rather than a wheel then turn on some assists in the menus.

@AaronTurner I have some assists on, and I am playing with a controller, I am thinking about turning anti lock brakes back on, but if I do that I'll probably never learn how to brake right

I'm playing with anti lock brakes on with a controller. If I was using my wheel I'd have everything off, but you really need assistance with the controller.

Turn on the racing line too to help you learn the tracks.

Stick with it, the racing is very difficult. I'd say just focus on your line and be very conservative around other cars.

I signed up to Mclaren because I'm an idiot, Australia was very tough going, helped along by my being rusty and making loads of mistakes. However China (a track I really enjoy driving) was raining throughout and I managed to nurse it home to 8th with a broken gearbox thanks to not pitting :) Should have been 7th but Ocon took me after the last corner because the stupid thing wouldn't get out of 4th gear.

It does worry me that I've had to change to component #2 on all my engine bits and my gearbox is basically fucked after 2 races. Am I doing too much practice or what?

No, as I said above, engine wear (and gearbox etc) is bugged if you aren't doing 100% races. If it was any other developer I'd be happy to wait for a patch, but this is Codemasters who have serious form in not fixing things, or fixing things and breaking other things then not fixing that.

If anyone is looking to buy this for the career I'd seriously recommend waiting until it's fixed.

Right I finished my first race, but I think I set it too easy now, managed third (using lots of replays because I keep making fatal mistakes) with experienced assists (except automatic gear) and 40 difficulty, maybe I'll try 50 difficulty, thanks for all the help!

    @AaronTurner

I should point out I've not got the game yet but considering it.

Is it a big difference between how everything wears at 50% race distance and 100% then? My guess is it's speeding up the wear on everything to act like a full distance race but in doing so Codemasters has calculated it incorrectly? Guessing the same goes for fuel?

I'm doing Sauber and after the first race all components had ~25% wear (50% race, all sessions although obviously I was out in Q1) which means I'll be 1 engine short by the end of the season which seems believable, just one race with a huge grid penalty but I'll be at the back anyway. What's the bug?

    The bug is:

All practise and qualy sessions are the same length regardless of the race length you choose but wear is treated differently according to race length when it shouldn't be. So if you choose 25% race length then any laps you do during practise or qualy will have 400% wear, at 50% race length you will get 200% wear in practice and qualy, and at 100% race length you will get 100% wear.

Ah that makes sense, I'm on 25% which is why my parts are all getting ruined. This game seems a lot like Dirt 4 in the sense that it is extremely good but marred by a multitude of bugs and flaws. I guess that's basically going to ruin my season, and when each weekend takes like an hour I'm not likely to do more than one or two seasons, which is a shame.

Good to know about the engine wear bug. Glad I chose Sauber as I'll be at the back anyway ;)

Tyre and fuel wear programmes: make sure you're not accelerating hard out of corners, take each corner a gear higher than you might originally want to and lift off the accelerator as you run in to the corner, roll through it, and then smoothly accelerate out.

It's not impossible, but it does take practice.

I went with McLaren and I thought the extreme engine wear was meant to be like that!

Right, that makes sense, thought the engine wore a lot after practice. At least 50% seems to mitigate it somewhat.

@technotica I think I've encountered this now, was it in the wet? In China I was attempting them in the wet because the Qualifying was going to be wet, but I'd lose 0.7 seconds to the target time on the back straight as if it was expecting me to open DRS, which makes sense because the delta started increasing as soon as I crossed the DRS line.

I managed to finish Monaco, using an absolute shitload of flashbacks, in last place. That track can die in a fire! Bloody nightmare.

Also I'm on my last engine already lol :/

The wear bug should have been patched with yesterday's 1.05 update. In the notes it days wear is reduced in 25% races. Worth making sure you have the update.

I hope the numpties checked and fixed the other distances. Also, there was never a problem with the race wear, it was only practice and qualy. Hopefully it's fixed properly!

Monaco can absolutely do one as far as I'm concerned. Car never seems to have enough steering lock to get round half the corners.

Had a cracking race at Azerbaijan last night though. Hamilton did my McLaren on the run down to the finish line. Lost out by 0.053 secs

At a guess, i'd say McLaren Honda is probably not a good place to start, based on the teams current performance in F1

Engine wear is scaled to practice as well so if do the practice programmes with 25% you get more than double the wear than if you did them at 100% even though the programmes themselves are the same length. The racing is great in this but it's the most fucked release since 2010
