Huge noob question here, but someone may be able to help with a problem I have with Super Metroid.

Having just collected the Morph Ball, I cant seem to use it. Some general searching says to tap down twice to activate it, but that simply doesn't work, so I'm wondering what I'm missing. Never owned SM back in the day when I had my original SNES so this ones all new to me...

Don't even have to do it quickly. Just press down twice.

Cheers chaps. There's clearly an issue here because double tapping down absolutely, steadfastly does nothing. I presume you don't need to 'equip' the ball? Going into the pause menu is showing up on Samus.

    Really, really weird...

    @Takeaway

I'm pretty sure you have to equip it.

So, what you're basically saying is: "why can't Metroid crawl"?

I think I'll start a DKC tonight. Which is better 2 or 3? I've played through 1 so want a fresh experience.

Right... So what games am I putting on this thing? I'm not too familiar with the SNES library.

Please note: I don't like JRPGs

@MrTomFTW Sell it then kill yourself.  Harsh, but fair for not liking JRPG's.

Secret of Mana is not really a JRPG. It's an action RPG.

Demon's Crest is a cool game. Indiana Jones Adventures. Shadowrun. Axelay. Gradius III. Final Fight. Lost Vikings 1 & 2.

It’s really missing some brawlers so get Turtles in Time and some Final Fight on there. Also stop not liking JRPGs. Give Chrono Trigger a try.

The benefit of JRPGs on the SNES is they aren't full of sickening androgynous cut scenes, and even the cat people are mere sprites. The stories are still bobbins in the main, but that's games for you.

You know what I just thought of? Alien 3! Maybe it was actually shit, but I remember liking it - I can still hear the grenade launcher sound in my head.

    Super Metroid
    Super Ghouls n Ghosts
    Super Mario World
    Super Mario Kart
    Super Smash TV
    Final Fight 1, 2 and 3
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time
    Castlevania IV
Secret of Mana (it is a RPG but not a JRPG, it's more like Zelda)
    Zelda: Link to the past
    Chrono Trigger
Soldiers of Fortune (US name for Chaos Engine)
    Yoshi's Island
    Donkey Kong Country 1, 2 and 3
    Mega Man X
    Contra III: Alien wars
    Street Fighter 2 turbo
    NBA Jam
    Mortal Kombat II
    F-Zero
    Demon's Crest
    Earthbound

It's difficult to recommend a "top 50 list" because there are about 600+ games for the Snes and it's all subjective and personal to you really.

Edit - I know half of the above are already on it - it's just my list that I use in general.

I only wanted to add the games that I thought should definitely be on there to make up the best of the best. As well as some childhood classics I'm particularly fond of.

    -Batman Returns
    -Castlevania Dracula X
-Chrono Trigger (never played but seems to be on everyones list)
-Donkey Kong Country 2 and 3 (don't have any love for 3 but why not complete the set?)
    -ISS Deluxe
-Jurassic Park (I'll complete it one day)
    -Killer Instinct
-Mega Man X2 and 3 (again never played them but complete set etc)
    -Mortal Kombat II
-NBA Jam Tournament (not an NBA fan but remember everyone raving about it back in the day)
    -Pilot Wings
-Secret of Evermore (Great action RPG by Squaresoft, doesn't get as much attention as it should)
    -Shadowrun
    -Super Mario All Stars
    -Super Bomberman 1 and 2
    -Super R-Type
    -Super Soccer
    -Super Star Wars (all 3)
    -Super Tennis
    -TMNT Turtles in Time
    -Tetris & Dr. Mario
-Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster Busts Loose (Don't judge me- it's a great game)
    -Zombies Eat My Neighbours

There's a few more that I'd put on but I don't want to dilute what should be the best of the best with some that are already in there just for nostalgia. Wanted to add Super Street Fighter with the additional characters but it's not compatible yet apparently. Feels like a much more complete set now.

Gradius III, Super R-Type, R-Type III, Super Aleste, UN Squadron.

I can see a theme, recurring...

Gradius III was the one for me. It looked IDENTICAL to the arcade Gradius at the time, which I was daft on - rather than all those faux versions doing the rounds on computers etc. Different levels obv, but even that was a plus. I played my mates. Bought one immediately from some importer. Heady days indeed...

@colinmac I'm absolutely crap at shooters, but Super R-Type has a massive place in my heart. It has it's failures (masses of slowdown, for instance), but the music is just awesome. I still regularly listen to the soundtrack on my phone.

Slowdown is minimised on the mini Snes - as it runs at 60hz, unlike the PAL Snes.

Well worth picking one up !

I loved Super R-Type too - except those level restarts right back to the beginning !

Just in case anyone's faced a similar issue, I stared a new character, collected the morph ball again and it works just fine. Checked back to he first character and it still doesn't work. Who knows what happened, random glitch or whatever, but after starting over again, alls well. Cheers for the responses.

    I added:

    - Super Mario All Stars
    - Pilotwings (which still looks and plays awesome!)
    - Sim City (which has got clunkier with age, but that music...)
    - Super Bomberman 5 Gold (I wanted as much of a PCEngine Bomberman '94 experience as possible!)
    - Final Fantasy V
    - Chrono Trigger
    - Super Star Wars

plus I added a bunch more themes :-)

I'll refrain from adding more games for now - got plenty to play with, I've actually been using the SNES instead of the Switch, even though I have got Golf Story and Splatoon to work through.
