we're looking at the expansion of course but the primary point of interest for us it the second patch which is due next week (I think? I'm not the Destiny expert)
we won't be weighing in on the state of the game until we've seen that
given the XP controversy etc the key story is the gameplay changes at the moment, not the new content
How odd. This is news happening today. The destiny sub reddit is a mess (even more so than usual). People are getting refunds based on the fact that an achievement has been locked out of vanilla D2 thanks to the DLC launch.

They were all over the Battlefront 2 outrage yet are ignoring this one. Strange.

I get that, but there's a pretty stark difference between 3 months and 6 weeks. Like I mentioned, I was away for a few weeks, and so barely had time to finish the main content - I was working my way up towards the raid when suddenly the goalposts got moved.

@Rogueywon Meanwhile, r/TheDivision is full of praise for their latest free update, out the same day as CoO and with far more content, and long after the season pass expired. They also have excellent community managers and most weeks have a live stream going over latest updates and directly addressing questions and concerns.

There's a thread on the subreddit called 'thanks for not being Bungie'. :) They reap what they sow.

Still feels to me like the expansions are the only way they can make their game ‘subscription’ based without getting Microsoft and Sony all pissy about changing the financing model.

‘Buy the game and get access to everything for 3 months, buy the expansions to get access for a year, buy subsequent expansions to get access to the next year’. Sting you for £20 every 3-6 months and £40 a year rather that have you pay £5 a month.

@y2rich you can play FF14 (subscription model) on PS4 so i dont imagine Sony will get pissy about it.

@GarlVinland I've noticed that ubi are supporting their games afterwards giving them the long tail other publishers are after. Seems easy and doesn't require stupid lootboxes

I'd probably be more fucked off about the D2 situation if I cared for the game at all

@y2rich I'm not sure the subscription model would work for them anyway. Once you go subscription, you absolutely need to maintain top-class customer support and content additions or you wither and die. Plus you can't really get away with doing pay-to-win on top of a subscription model (Blizzard have clearly been tempted over the years, but have always backed away).

Very few companies really make the subscription model work long term, because of the developer commitment and culture it requires. Blizzard, Square-Enix, SoE and CCP are probably the only examples.

@Graxlar_v3 Indeed as I used to but that’s an actual MMO. Tell everyone your game isn’t an MMO and people aren’t going to want to subscribe to play it. I’m basing the Sony/Microsoft comments in something I was fed back when I brought this up around D1 Dark Below/HoW time

I really need to get back into The Division now that it's apparently better. Too bad the gunplay is just inferior to Destiny.

Honestly, the only reason I play Destiny at all is because they nailed the shooting part better than anyone else. Which is not a simple matter. But the way they've managed the endgame so far is quite poor.

@y2rich I tried a couple events in the EDZ and didn't get anything. Whereas the Mercury ones always give me an item.

@Malek86 got my 10 green Radiolarian I needed for the first Forge weapon all on Earth. Took 6 or 7 public events and a bunch of chests to get them. Did a bunch with my clan last night but they’re not guaranteed

Oooh, really? I could totally go in for some of that.
    Refunds coming from 1st party?

This is rapidly turning into the biggest full price purchase regret of my videogaming life.

Between this exploitative DLC shitshow, the XP throttling to encourage MT purchases, and the job posting hinting at even more aggressive exploitation in future... fuck this game.

Halo 3 is one of my favourite games of all time. Bungie have fallen farther than I could ever have believed they would, and I hate what the AAA industry seems to be turning into.

Ta, I'll give that a go.
The heroic achievement is actually the last one I needed, and I'd been putting it off for a while as no-one plays anymore.

Didn't know about the job posting, just saw it. Makes me really disappointed that my purchase is funding their 'vision'. :(

EG have a fairly matter-of-fact story on the front-page now.

This season has just felt like a breaking point to me. Maybe I'm wrong and things will continue down the same path, but I really do sense that too many straws have been placed on the camel's back since September and it is now well and truly broken.

I'm never much of a fan of September-November industry Death March to Christmas. It's the time of year when the industry splashes out its annual doses of spunkgargleweewee and the actually-interesting releases brave or foolhardy enough to schedule for the period get commercially buried. My favourite period for releases is usually the February to May window.

But let's face it, between Battlefront 2, Shadow of War, Destiny 2 and others, this year has been really, really awful. Even outlets which can normally be counted on to side with industry against "toxic" or "entitled" gamers have been forced to take a more hostile line. Moreover, it's spread beyond the specialist media this year. I'm not delighted with everything that's happened. I wish Governments weren't sniffing around, particularly given all of the David Cage Detroit rubbish that will no doubt get bundled with it at the political level. But even so, I just don't see how the present "grind the screws tighter and tighter" industry model can continue for another year now.

Yeah, I pretty much feel the same, and I've not even reached the end-game yet since PC launch!

This is compounded by the fact that, for the first time ever, I actually bought the deluxe pre-order pack with season pass, against my better judgement. What. A. Fucking. Mug.

Only just seen the job posting, disappointed but not surprised.

Games are big business, extracting as much money as possible from the player base is heavily factored into the design of almost all online games these days.

I need to start choosing the games I play more carefully, I regret buying into the 'franchise' and supporting this.

@Rogueywon Totally agree, but I also saw mention on Reddit of someone who gave $50 worth of XBox credit to a kid and watched him spend all of it on MTX in Rainbow Six Siege. And noted that for an entire generation, this practice is entirely normal.

Despite the uproar, I reckon this model will just keep evolving. I have no idea the proportion, but the ones who are vocal about this don't seem to number enough to give real pause to publishers. It says a lot that Bungie can be so brazen in their implementation and still feel like, playing the numbers game, they will make enough money to cover the bad publicity and players they drive away.

We're the dinosaurs in this situation and there's a whole generation of players, the publishers' key market, for whom this is normalised.

The MTX wouldn't be an issue if the game around it was good enough, and if the MTX themselves were desirable.

@GarlVinland as a general rule, I can kind of understand though. Games today are made to be played for years. Kids buy COD and play it essentially until the new one comes out, at which point they'll get the new COD and play that instead.

In this kind of situation, why should anyone want to spend money on new games, when they are already going to play a specific game all the time anyway? Of course they'd rather just buy FIFA card packs or Rainbow Six operators.

It's true that, nowadays, it feels like we are the ones stuck to an old business model and who simply refuse to let go. And as usual with new things, I'm never really sure who's right.

I despair for the future of the human race. Basing this on how worked up folks on the front page are getting themselves over a toy gun that isn't real.

So i ended up picking up the season pass as i didnt want to be "behind the curve" conpared to my friends. Wow that was completely underwhelming.

"oh look weve added a whole new planet" no youve added essentially a large single room. nothing like the other planets in size at all.

You know i feel its a shame, as at its core its a great game. Its a lot of fun with friends. There is just nothing to it. couple of hours and can have the milestones done every week. (except the raid but thats just due to finding time with mates)

The forge will probably take a bit of my time. That's good, I think. Gives me a bit more of a reason to patrol and strike, also those goddamn Heroic adventures (good thing you still get some rewards even if the timer runs out).

@wuntyphyve yep. You now can't do hard raid, nightfalls, trials of the nine, get certain guns or all the achievements. Soon they will also wall you off in PvP. You also can't do the weekly heroic stuff.

Depends on what kind of endgame you play, but yeah, several activities have been locked behind DLC.

Looks like they have actually kept Quickplay and Competitive around, at least. I seem to remember that every new expansion in Destiny 1 forced you to buy it if you wanted to play PvP.
