Coming to Xbox One, PC and PS4. The guy behind the Sonic CD ports is involved so I'm actually interested as they were very well done.

If Sonic doesn't have any momentum they've learnt nothing.

I'm pretty sure that will be fixed in this one. Replayed some of Sonic 4 last night now it is backwards compatible and it really is shocking how much they messed up the inertia.

I'm tentatively looking forward to this. it looks the part, certainly. Hopefully it'll play well, and hopefully the level design is up to scratch.

The Sonic series hasn't had any momentum since the first dreamcast game... ;)

This looks rather good. I hope it lives up to the originals. The closest I came to enjoying a Sonic game that wasn't on the Mega Drive was with Sonic Colours, which had some genuinely great moments. It's just those were few and far between.

Sonic Generations wasn't too bad. It was a similar experience though.

Yeah. Sonic Generations has a lot in common with Colours. To be fair it wasn't any worse. I just wasn't as willing to give the series another go at the time.

Could have done without the 'MANIA, HE FUCKIN' CRAY' tag line but sure, looks much better than anything Sonic post 1996.

I've thought to myself for ages they should have given Christian Whitehead a job making a new Sonic game. Who knew modern Sega was actually capable of making a smart choice.

Small concern that the level design could look a little cluttered but that's a nitpick.

They've also announced what essentially looks like generations 2

Christian Whitehead is involved, so this will be good. Finally a proper Sonic game.

Sonic Mania, hurrah maybe Sega know what they're doing. Project Sonic, oh.

To be honest, I even liked most of the 3D levels, I think they can be done well. Even that Werehog game had some pretty cool levels, it just went to crap when they tried to make it a dark fighting game.

The only part of Generations that failed for me was the boss fights, especially the last.

Hard to tell from that. Possibly a bit like Generations, which wouldn't be a bad thing at all. If it's done well. The tone seems a bit odd, bit too serious maybe.

The 3D levels in Generations were better than the 2D ones. The new style of 3D Sonic with the corridor running is fine, it's a fairly unique genre and personally I enjoy it a lot. They've never perfected the formula though, there have always been niggles and frustrations with each game. They just need to make the controls a bit tighter and refine some of the level design so there's less annoying shit.

That new 3D Sonic trailer looks like shit though. Literally, it's all brown. The Mega Drive Sonic games managed to have the sky falling without making everything post-apocalyptic and "dark". They even napalmed the entire first level in S&K and it was still ace.

Yeah, I ended up preferring the 3D levels in Generations as well - they were great fun and very replayable.

    Studiopolis music.

I love it. If this is the standard of the soundtrack it's going to be amazing.

To be fair Generations was a very good game. If this one can be more like the first half than the second half of it then this could also be worth a look.

Don't see why they don't release generations 2. Generations easily the best sonic game in recent times.

I thought that. Looks like the stylings of Sonic CD - darker, with busier level design. I'd have preferred the Sonic 2 look. But, as you say, nitpicking. We should just be glad Sega are doing this, I guess.

If anyone is wondering why Sonic fans are hyped about this game, bunnyhop has done a decent explanation of the history of the developers and why it probably means this will be good.

Oh I agree Generations was fantastic. I never played Sonic Adventure back in the day, as I was a Sony fanboy, but yeah I'd be up for something similar to Generations 2.
